Set: 1992-93 Upper Deck - World Junior Grads (Rate)

Card: #WG5 Pavel Bure

“ When I was first reading names off of cards, I assumed his name was pronounced like "byoor". When I got into the sport, and learned it was pronounced "bury", I have to admit I was surprised. Although not as surprised as I was by the pronunciation of Dustin Byfuglien's last name! ” -Billy Kingsley

“ A colorful glove would have worked better for my taste. I don't care for the awfully simple top banner. The font lacks size - bigger is better. ” -Sportzcommish

“ Loved the older Canucks colors, before they went with the flying C orca thing. ” -olerud363

“ Did he have something to do with the Russian's messing with the election? ” -carthage44

“ Typical early 90s UD design, which isn't a bad thing at all. The back side top border is a bit too large for my liking, however. ” -kents_stuff

“ put the canucks on the map!!! ” -parsley24

“ The Russian Rocket, loved watching him play. Hard to believe it's been 25 years since his cards were blowing up the marketplace! ” -rmitchell6700

“ Pavel again. My all-time favorite hockey player, and the reason my favorite NHL team is the farthest team from where I live (I think). Nice photo. Great uniform. I really like this card. Best RCOTD since we had the King of Mystery recently. ” -switzr1

“ What a great color scheme. Much better than the current. ” -IndyBean17

“ Russian Rocket ! Not a bad looking card . I remember when these first came out and they were selling for crazy prices at the flea markets . ” -uncaian

“ Nice UD card OK no team name? He is from Russia did they just have one rep per country is that how they did this "world junior grads" thing? I guess it is a best of thing? ” -captkirk42

“ I like it when HOFers' cards come up on RCotD. The black, orange, gold uniforms were the ugliest color combo EVER. So glad they finally went back to their original colors. ” -C2Cigars

Set: 2011-12 Upper Deck Black Diamond (Rate)

Card: #10 Bobby Orr

“ I would prefer a dedicated Legends set rather than situating random legends into current player sets, but in some instances you have to take what you can get. This is a fantastic scan for an etched card, I don't know yet who made the scan, but you have my gratitude. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ A great one on a card ruined when they chose to modify the background. ” -Sportzcommish

“ We get to write about Bobby Orr on a day Ray Borque is RCOTD. How coincidental that a Bruins great and a Bruins great are so close together. It's funny how this card is worth more, but I think I like the Po Set Borque better. ” -muskie027

“ Ray Bourque as the RCOTD on the day you can comment on this one. What a co-inky-dink. ” -trauty

“ Great player, weak card. ” -carthage44

“ Good to see Orr is still playing. ” -NJDevils

“ Bobby Orr rocks! ” -cjjt

“ Not sure why a 2011 card of a guy long-retired would only have 5 years of stats on it. And why those 5 years? ” -kents_stuff

“ Some of the worst scanning cards every produced. #thanksUpperDeck ” -IndyBean17

“ Um OK the RCotD that showed up was another Bruin a nice Pro Set now we get the silver happy Black Diamond that is so-so to OK in person, but really stinks scanned. ” -captkirk42

“ Never cared for the Black Diamond designs. And I don't care for cards produced for inactive/retired players. They have no value other than intrinsic. I see it as nothing but a money grab by the card companies. ” -C2Cigars

“ Best player ever !! Not a bad looking card . ” -uncaian

Set: 2005 Bowman Heritage - Mahogany (Rate)

Card: #165 Melvin Mora

“ Is this supposed to look this? I hope not. I like the Heritage concept but this execution is...iffy, At best. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Respect for the vintage Bowman series. ” -Sportzcommish

“ “I’m very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.” — Ron Burgundy ” -carthage44

“ As i jump back into the hobby, the heritage designs and the archives are the ones i find the most alluring. Not a real fan of the modern card look. Except the clarity of the photos. ” -parsley24

“ Love these parallels. First the 1951 Bowman design is classic plus using real cardboard instead of modern pressed card stock. Need to complete my Nats from this set and maybe the Os. Sometimes its tempting to look for a full set that is real cheap. ” -captkirk42

“ Unfortunately the Mets had to part ways with Melvin Mora at the deadline in 2000 to get Mike Bordick from the O's. As it turned out, they should've just kept Melvin. ” -mkaz80

“ if it werent for the name of the player or the card brand, i would have thought this card was from 1967 ” -Bargunmaster

“ So if this were really a 1951 card I'd say it was cool (although it looks like astroturf in the background, so I don't know). But since it's a 2005 card, can they really put the copyright 1951 symbol? Is that for the design? For their font of "Baseball Picture Cards"? What? ” -kents_stuff

“ One day I am going to love Heritage. I love the look, but just can't get over that it wasn't meant for the modern player. ” -muskie027

“ A little bit dark, but still a nice looking card. Been a while since I heard/read the name Melvin Mora. ” -rmitchell6700

Set: 2005 Upper Deck Foundations (Rate)

Card: #66 Curtis Martin

“ One of the best Chris Berman-isms of all-time: Curtis "My Favorite" Martin. ” -mkaz80

“ Any given year the Jets usually have either a player I like along with everyone else (Curtis Martin), one that no one else but me likes (Gastineau) one that nobody can like more than he likes himself (Keyshawn Johnson) and one you just have to respect either way (Chrebet). As a franchise they're uninspiring to the point of annoyance. Watching the Jets play is like going over a bunch of speed bumps when you really have to pee. Always slightly unpleasant. ” -Id8jlb8666

“ It's nice when a HOFer card shows up on RCotD. Especially when it's not an ugly card. I for one was happy to see him "follow" Parcells to New York. ” -C2Cigars

“ C. Mart was really good, this set was not. ” -carthage44

“ Good looking card. Good looking uni's. ” -parsley24

“ I am not a Jets but I do like their uniforms. ” -NJDevils

“ Okay design, but hate the re-use of the picture on the back. ” -cjjt

“ Nice looking front. Player name still needs to be one of the first things you see and slightly larger than set brand names/logos. Bacl size of photo OK but it is a headshot of the action shot on the front. Rest of back OK just 5 years of stats for a player of 16 seasons? UGH. ” -captkirk42

“ Too much green. I'd prefer more contrasting colors. Maybe even if the Jets helped out by getting rid of the green pants this particular card would be improved. ” -Sportzcommish

“ I like this card. Reminds me a lot of a set Fleer made about eight years prior, which I can't remember the name of. ” -switzr1

“ Nice card. I like the design of both the front and the back. I really like the black UD logo, too. ” -kents_stuff

Set: 1995 SP (Rate)

Card: #39 Todd Zeile

“ Really like the blue border. I can't tell if it's holographic or not, that would only make it even better. I don't think I've ever seen any of this set in person, from baseball. The same design was used for at least two of my sports. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I know he played for 843 teams, but Zeile will never look right in those second-rate pinstripes. Not a bad-looking set, though. ” -switzr1

“ A great-looking card from a premium set of the era. The text in the blue chevron is a little bit tricky in terms of being able to read it clearly, but it looks nice. Nice, big photo on the back. ” -mkaz80

“ A super big "meh" for this effort. ” -NJDevils

“ Zeile was a solid player for a long time. ” -carthage44

“ How many late 80's collections are anchored on the Todd Zeile craze. I remember this being one of the first cards that saw a spike in demand, due to ladies purchasing because of his attractiveness. Not a bad looking dude, but a lot of money wasted on this guy. Cool card though. ” -parsley24

“ A 1990s set I love hate. I sort of like the front design, but it is hard to read. Player name should be much bigger. It should always be easy to tell WHO is on the card. back photo way too big some will be glad it is a different photo than the front. I still don't think the back photos should be that big unless it is a faded/shadow background photo. Should be more than just one year of stats. ” -captkirk42

“ aye it's the cubs ” -TradingCards964

“ I kind of like the colored triangle on the side, but would have liked to see the team logo somewhere on the front. ” -olerud363

“ Good design. Nice pictures. ” -cjjt

“ I really like most of the SP designs, and this one is no different. I don't recall having any of these cards in my collection, though. ” -kents_stuff

“ What's with the swatch of grandma's sofa? ” -Sportzcommish

“ I like the look of this. I forgot Zeile played for the Cubs. The blue side is very appealing. ” -muskie027

“ One of my favorites from Upper Deck in the mid 90's. Love the different colored foils that they used... ” -rmitchell6700

“ A Cub! Barely. I generally like the design, but don't need the company logo to be sooooo prominent. Good, different picture on the back. Minimal stats and information, though. It's ok. ” -Vvvergeer

Set: 1995 Fleer Waterworld Movie (Rate)

Card: #108 Help from Above

“ I collect some movie/TV cards, but only of the individual characters played by the actors, and not action scenes from the film/show. ” -Sportzcommish

“ At least the scan is good! ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Never heard of these cards. I guess they were as successful as the movie was. ” -olerud363

“ What an average movie. ” -carthage44

“ Me trying to get my kids to walk around puddles in their new shoes. ” -parsley24

“ Interesting card.OK looking from a movie that tanked. "Help from Above"? Looks more like a complicated wedgie device. ” -captkirk42

“ 1995... seems so very long ago. ” -Doe MG

“ Wow, a card for child abuse?? ” -NJDevils

“ Speaking of water, flush this card. ” -DanD

“ Once again, proves the point that there is a card for everything! ” -cckeith

“ Love the movie. Never knew there were cards. ” -jayoneill

“ Enough people warned me about the movie that I have still never seen it. No one warned me about the cards, though, and now I have seen one. In the future, could one of y'all warn me? ” -kents_stuff

“ Everyone loves this movie. I have some of the pictures of water insert cards. ” -UKboogie

“ I have never seen this movie. I remember the big hype and awful reviews. Looks really nice for a 95 movie card and if this was your flick. Since I have never seen this, the only thing that comes to mind is the line from Jim Carey in the Cable Guy when he quotes it by saying, "Dry land is not a myth, I have seen it......Kevin Costner, Water World, I don't know what all the fuss was about, I saw that movie 6 times, it ruled!!!!" ” -muskie027

“ Never seen the movie, although general consensus is it is horrible. Well with expectations that low maybe I'd enjoy it not looking for much! ” -rmpaq5

“ How did this movie get a set of trading cards? One of those movies, everyone jokes how bad it was, but probably most (myself included) never actually saw it. ” -switzr1

Set: 1998 Circa Thunder (Rate)

Card: #130 Ray Lankford

“ I loved this design when it was new, in 1997, as Z-Force in the NBA. At the time it was in my top 5 favorite sets all time. Now, as I've matured (?) or perhaps just refined my taste in cards, it didn't even make my Top 20 Favorite sets countdown I did on Cardboard History to celebrate my 20th anniversary of being an NBA fan last year. Every time I see it I still get that old nostalgic feeling though. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Ouch! What an eyesore! I'd only seek these to add to my player collection and not team set. ” -Sportzcommish

“ TOO much going on..... ” -parsley24

“ Yay Cardinals! Lankford was a fan favorite in a time when we didn't have much to cheer for in the early 90's, before LaRussa got there and started recruiting players like McGwire, Rolen, Edmonds, and others. Good to see him as a RCOTD. The card itself has never been one of my favorites, but not terrible either. For all the business of the graphics, they did seem to choose good action photos for most of the cards, at least. The back is average. The quote is pretty much exactly why Cardinal Nation enjoyed him so much. ” -Brimose

“ This set just screams "I am from the late 90s" with its lame computer generated background that has nothing to do with baseball, or even thunder for that matter. I never cared for this set. ” -YoRicha

“ Trippy background. ” -carthage44

“ I thought this was an insert set. Looks like its own full blown set. Reminds me of the latest Topps Fire. A bit too busy going on with the background. Back has some odd stats there or an odd way of presenting some of them. ” -captkirk42

“ I like the background ” -TradingCards964

“ The front of this card has a bit too much going on to suit my taste. The back is nice though. I'm left wondering if the stat illustrated by the bar graph was expressly selected for Lankford. One of these years is not like the others... ” -dilemma19

“ Wooo! Circa Thunder. The backgrounds on this set were crazy. Lankford looks like he's trying to avoid being swallowed by some sort of wormhole. Dig the back - OBP bars are pretty cool, quote is nice (these were on the front in '97), I can even live with the single season stat line. Just wish that shadow wasn't there. ” -marcbrubaker

“ Loud, very loud ” -rmitchell6700

“ I don't know about this design. Maybe there's a bit too much going on, especially on the front. But I'll say this about Mr. Lankford: if you're a St. Louis Cardinal and want to endear yourself to your fan base, quoting Willie McGee is a good start. ” -kents_stuff

“ It's different. Not sure if I like it or not. I will say that it looks like a better poster than card. ” -muskie027

“ Looks more like lightning! A+ for effort here. Not bad set because it is different. ” -cjjt

“ Cool, a Cardinal! Best Cardinal player of one of their worst eras historically. The early 90s were not kind to the Cardinals, and featured their only last-place finish since World War 1. Ray appears to be dancing. And this is a horrible-looking set. But I would take it. ” -switzr1

“ This is one of those sets that in my opinion the backs are stronger than the front. A good, and DIFFERENT photo, break down of different cyber stats, and a nice little quote. For a set with a computer generated background also not that bad comparative speaking. Also a good number of the cards numbers match the player's jersey number. It is one of those sets actually that I have partially completed and have the missing Tigers as 2 wants and the rest of the set that I am missing as a want to complete it. ” -rmpaq5

Set: 1994 Collector's Choice - Gold Signature (Rate)

Card: #394 Kevin Gross

“ These are much nicer than the NBA versions, which are mirror foil, except the International versions. The gold border really looks nice here. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Parallel or not, I seem to be a sucker for cards with a cartoon on the front representing the position of the player. ” -rmpaq5

“ Both the company logo and the position icon seem misplaced or too big. I'd rather have a top or bottom bar with player info than the way this card is structured. ” -Sportzcommish

“ We had a Collectors Choice not to long ago. This was good set, even with the facsimile signature. ” -IfbBirdsCards

“ I liked the concept of CC's signature parallels. And I've always liked the 1994 CC card layout. ” -kents_stuff

“ Gross had a long interesting career pitching for 5 different teams from 1983-1997, an All-Star in 1988, pitched a no hitter in 1992, surrendered the first of Rafael Palmeiro's 569 career home runs in 1986 and was suspended for 10 games in 1987 for pitching with an illegal substance (sandpaper) on his glove. ” -carthage44

“ I bought soooooo many packs trying to get these gold parallels. Only got a handful after all that lol ” -Joshua825

“ From when parallels were more manageable, but still near-impossible to complete. My uncle attempted (possibly succeeded) to complete the gold set from this design of basketball. One per box. Helped pave the way for the current state of the hobby. Thumbs down. ” -switzr1

“ I am torn on Collector's Choice. This looks cool, but I always dislike the Collectors Choice branding. The UD branding by itself would be cool. The cartoon pitcher looks great, bbut why so big? A team logo may have looked better and the cartoon guy on the front. Then the name and team name. So so so so small! Like all other Collector's Choice cards, I like it, but could have been so much better. ” -muskie027

“ Now this is a gold variant/parallel. I have already said what I think about "collector's choice". OK the front of this card I like that you can tell its the gold version none of this just because the players name is in gold foil lettering makes it "gold". The player name needs to be bigger more prominent. Sheesh the cartoon position guy is larger than the player's name. UGH back. The photo is twenty times too big. And the stats looks like 5 years is the most this guy has 11 years according to the totals. Sigh.Oh and the team logo is on the back. Would look nicer on the front as well. ” -captkirk42

“ Whoa! Kevin! Your shoes are REALLY untied. ” -Vvvergeer

Set: 1991-92 Pro Set French (Rate)

Card: #9 Ray Bourque

“ that face tho ” -TradingCards964

“ Really like Pro Set, wish they lasted longer than they did. They got it right. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I can't say enough how much I loved Pro Set. ” -muskie027

“ A decent card with a nice action shot and well-placed logos. I'd prefer the lower name banner to extend all the way across and to include the player's position. ” -Sportzcommish

“ Really nice card. It's one of those that seems like it's come up before on RCOTD, but maybe a parallel or a different set with similar setup. ” -kents_stuff

“ I have a signed copy of this card (well, the English version) that turned up in a barrel of clothes at the second-hand clothing store my Mom used to own. No way to confirm that it was really Bourque who signed it, but it does look like his signature. ” -bevans

“ Pro Set was only around for a few years but I loved them! ” -carthage44

“ First thing to check on a Pro Set card...how many variations are there???? ” -IndyBean17

“ the set that got me interested in hockey cards. ” -parsley24

“ One of the best defensemen in my lifetime, was very glad to see him win a Cup while with the Avalanche. ” -rmitchell6700

“ I don't mind this design. Nice picture actually. Notice the awful 90's hair in the stands. ” -IfbBirdsCards

Set: 2013 Press Pass Legends - Holofoil (Rate)

Card: #9 Bill Elliott

“ Car #9, card #9, serial #9. Also 9+9+9=27, and 2+7=9! Fantastic number nine! (Yes, I am a geek.) ” -olerud363

“ For a brief moment, I thought this was Ricky Bobby. I really wish I had been right. ” -switzr1

“ I don't know much about racing cards, but this seems to have everything you could ask for. A picture of the driver on the front, and a shot of his car on the back. To quote Forest Gump, "And that's all I got to say about that." ” -YoRicha

“ Legend. great design. ” -parsley24

“ The only thing cool about this card is it is serial numbered to 10. ” -carthage44

“ Nice racing card I guess. Even though it is Press Pass and they were 50/50 with Football stuff. ” -captkirk42

“ Above average card design. The name on the front is a bit hard to read (font and foil). Not nearly as clear as the brand. I like the write-up, but it's curious to not have any mention of his team or car. Maybe those weren't emphasized as much back in the 80s. ” -dilemma19

“ Nice rare parallel. And 9 is the number most closely associated with the entire Elliott family. He won the most popular driver award 16 times. I believe this photo is from 1985. I'm glad Press Pass didn't censor Coors but they did censor Winston. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ For some reason this card makes me think of my grandparents kitchen in the 1970s. Its probably the colors. A lime green border would have completed the look. Not a bad card though. ” -cnangle

“ AWESOME BILL!!! ” -IndyBean17

“ Even if it was a legend I cared about, this has too much wasted space on the front even though it is a framed design. ” -Sportzcommish

“ this doesn’t look like a 2013 card, it looks like a card from 1983 ” -Bargunmaster

“ I think this is a pretty cool card, and I still haven't started a racing collection. Serial number and picture of a Legend is cool. Car on the back is cool. I would imagine a driver on the font and car on the back is a great way for a racing card to go. ” -muskie027
