Year: 1996

Set: Upper Deck Road to the Cup (Rate)

Card: #RC135 Johnny Benson

“ Wow, I really don't like this. Such a boring card. I actually didn't know what it was or what sport until I read it, then I was able to see the racer uniform in the back. It would have been better had there been a racing shot, or even a post race shot. ” -muskie027

“ This card had potential but something is off about it. I would prefer Benson at the award ceremony to have a more center image instead of off to the right side. ” -nubala

“ Love Benson but this card is just plain ugly ” -mbarlow092

“ Nice bow tie! ” -carthage44

“ "..and the Oscar goes to..." Oh wait this is a racing card. WHERE'S THE CAR? That is what Clara Peller wants to know. Actually Mr. Benson here looks more like he is going to conduct an orchestra or make a commencement speech. ” -captkirk42

These cards are actually much better looking in-hand. This is a subset card of Award Winners for the 1995 season with pictures from the end-of-season banquet. That's why there are no cars pictured on any of them. There was a subset earlier in the set that is JUST the cars. I am still 2 cards short of owning this complete set!

The concept of an awards banquet seems to be going over many of your heads.

I don't know how I missed writing about this one! I love this set, or at least, I did. For some reason I ordered a hobby box off of QVC's For Race Fans Only back when the set was new, instead of from my local card shop. The entire set is mirror foil- the first time that happened in NASCAR- and when I was 12 I thought it was the greatest thing ever. Now that I've attempted to scan my entire collection, I don't like it as much, mirror foils are a pain now that I've become a scanner.
This is a really good scan. I don't know who did it, but it wasn't me, mine would not have looked this good due to my scanner not liking mirror foils even more than Kirk doesn't, LOL.

Benson won the 1995 Busch championship (NASCAR's second tier) which is why he was at an awards banquet. He is one of a few drivers who did not sign with Press Pass when they got the exclusive license in 2001 so much of his career is undocumented. He would later win the Truck championship as well. He's retired now.

My goal is to get at least one card from every person with an NBA, NASCAR or NHL card.

COOL! I didn't know that was my scan AND it's my first COTD! I could probably get a better scan now with my newer scanner, but those are hard-to-scan cards. I was just happy to not have to do the whole set when I scanned that one. I think most of the set had scans already.

EDIT: Looking at the rest of the AW cards from that set, the ones I did really are the best ones. I just might have to scan all the others and replace the crappy scans with much better ones.
