Random Card of the Day

Year: 2002

Set: Press Pass Trackside (Rate)

Card: #52 Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“ One of many pointless subsets Press Pass was so fond of...they couldn't figure out that a NASCAR set should show cars, but we got subsets about driver's "star signs" and the like. Most of Dale Jr's cards from 1999 through 2007 were also severely damaged by censorship; this one is not. Dale Jr. is one of my all time favorite drivers so that was especially frustrating for me. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ YAWN... ” -SFC Temple

“ It annoys me when Jr. or Sr. is included as part of someone's last name. His last name is Earnhardt, not Earnhardt Jr. If he is married, his wife's last name isn't Earnhardt Jr. His kids last names aren't Earnhardt Jr. It's Earnhardt. This bugs me because I am a Jr. myself. Sorry for the rant. ” -switzr1

Though I am not a race card collector, I agree with Billy.   Show the cars!   Not the driver in a Tshirt. At least show the driver in his driving suit.    Same with football, baseball or any sport.  Don't show the player with his warmup sweats or shorts on.

I really hope someone picks up the NASCAR license and puts out sets again.  Hopefully they will have better subsets and feature more of the drivers instead of 30 of the same guy all the time.

Also, switzr1 I understand your point, but as a Jr. myself, I like to see it shown.  I do think they need to include the comma after the name to show it isn't part of their last name, but I still like it included.  Matter of fact, it bugs me when they DON'T include it.

switzr1, how would you differentiate between the two people with the same name, then? I know my brother still gets mail for my father (who passed away in 2002) and neither of them used Sr. or Jr. We really don't want to go back to "The Elder" and "The Younger" (IE, Pliny) do we? :). As it is, several people have submitted checklists and left off the Jr. and then the cards were credited to his father, which I had to fix when I spotted them.

Maybe people with the same name should have different PID's assigned which they would then wear on a hat or on a shirt, jersey style, depending on preference.

2002 Trackside is one of the ugliest racing sets I've ever seen. I didn't intentionally buy any packs, but got a few in re-packs. I've tried to get rid of any of those cards that aren't PC drivers. I think I still have a few of them b/c nobody wants them.

Billy, in what way were the cards censored?

Dale Jr's sponsor was Budweiser, which was removed from the cards, and replaced with cheesy graphics. They started censoring Budweiser in 1995, and still did up to the 2015 release, although now they just leave the area blank instead of stupid fake stuff.

censoring is not really the right word.

I think it is Michael, considering that Coors, Viagara, and Jack Daniels were all censored at times as well. I can't remember if Miller was or not.
