Year: 1993

Set: Racing Champions Stock Car (Rate)

Card: #01920 Alan Kulwicki

“ Alan was the last sole owner-driver to win the Winston (now Sprint) Cup. He came from almost 300 points back with 5 races to go, and won the title by 10 points. It was truly not decided until the last lap of the season, and no one expected it to play out that way. Unfortunately Alan and three others were killed in a plane crash on April 1st, 1993. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Hooters! What else can be said? Oh wait it is a racing card not the 1993 or '93 pinup cards. :( ” -captkirk42

“ With Hooters as your sponsor, there's so much more you can put on your suit than the logo... ” -jlaz10

“ Kulwicki would have died around the time this card was released. I remember when it happened, but did not know until I saw this card that he was coming off a championship season. ” -switzr1

As I wrote on my blog a while back, Kulwicki was my first favorite driver.  Sadly when he passed I had to find a new driver to root for.  Turns out it was Davey Allison, who also died a short while later.

This card does nothing for me, but I did just get a couple cards of Alan off Listia, which will hold me over until I can watch NASCAR on TV again (stupid FOX and NBC- putting races on cable channels I don't get).

The card itself isn't very good since it doesn't even show his car, but it brings back a bunch of memories.  Alan was the guy I rooted for the most as he represented the "little guy" battling against the high dollar teams.  I still remember finiding out on 1 April 93 that he had died.  I thought somebody was playing a cruel April fools joke on me until I turned on the TV and saw his transporter take a couple laps around Bristol speedway before leaving.  Very sad.

My favorite nascar cards have the cars on them with the driver but a close second is the winner's circle or posing with the trophy.  A class act and still missed by many.
