Year: 1994

Set: Upper Deck (Rate)

Card: #40 Albert Belle

“ He kinda looks like The Flash running with the world distorted behind him due to his incredible speed! ” -rmpaq5

“ Nice fluffy clouds! Was this the first year Albert ceased to be Joey? ” -dilemma19

“ ACK! The 1994 UD set was OK a bit strange, but still OK. This "Fantasy Team" sub-set, However, Doesn't really fit at all. ” -captkirk42

“ What a great cheater he was. ” -carthage44

“ The dreaded subset card. Never have liked them, just doesn't make sense unless it's an All-Star, League Leader, or some kind of season or career high-light. Decent looking card, would have been better without the sky fade to the right though, back I suppose would suit the subject of Fantasy Teams. Belle was a solid enough player with good numbers for the amount of time he played, good enough fielder who was only wasted in the bum slot 222 games. Seeing DH listed beside OF for his position would be enough for me to get rid of the card, unless I needed it for the complete set. ” -Doc Floyd

“ Must have been taken in Colorado as the dugout seems to be on the edge of a mountain top. ” -NJDevils

“ "...And he stole the lightning from the sky, then returned to Earth to obliterate the poor ball." ” -DarkSide830

I didn't even notice what may be this card's best feature:  The player featured on the front is not even included in the list of players on the back.  Does that mean Wayne Kirby, David Hulse and Kevin Reimer would have been better Fantasy Team picks than Albert Belle??

Belle hit 36 HR's, had 101 RBI's, scored 90 runs, 147 hits, with a .357 AVG, and .714 SLG. Played LF in 104 games, and was only wasted for 2 at DH out of the 106 games he played in '94.

Kirby didn't do too bad, hit .293, 5 HR, 33 runs, 23 RBIs in 78 games.

Hulse, 1 HR and hit .255 with 19 RBIs in 77 games.

Kevin Reimer wasn't even in the majors after the '93 season.

So no, Belle was the best choice.

Agreed.  I intentionally mentioned three inferior players whose stat lines appeared on the back of the card.  If Belle is listed, I overlooked him.

I'm quite surprised Albert was a left fielder for 104/106 games in 1994.  Not having done the statistical research to back it up, I always thought of Belle as a weak glove, strong bat.  Maybe Kirby's breakout season gave the Indians enough outfielders that they could move "the athlete formerly known as Joey" to DH.

He must of not been too bad with his glove, unless the teams he was on had someone worse.

1,017 games in LF, and 297 in RF. 34,152 outs, 2,637 PO, 92 A, 66 errors, with an overall fielding % of .976.

Only 222 games at DH, with 100 of those in '92. Not too shabby, what's really surprising is he only played 12 seasons, no idea why, but I do recall him having a pretty nasty attitude.

It's a good thing they didn't call him Joey!
