Year: 2012

Set: Panini Triple Play (Rate)

Card: #61 Chase Utley

“ I feel bad for the tree that gave it's life for this card to exist. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Cool stuff I never had. ” -dah15

“ Panini doesn't have a baseball license but they make cards anyway? Why does anyone buy them? I collect basketball and it makes me sad that Panini has the license but I'm trying to stop buying their cards because 90% of them are crap. Panini is a purveyor of crap on their best day. ” -UKboogie

“ I own the 2013 Jose Altuve of this style from Panini Triple Play, but only because it's Altuve, not because I like these card designs. ” -Sportzcommish

“ I have a feeling this is going to get slammed, but remember this was an inexpensive set specifically designed for kids. ” -rmpaq5

“ No. No logo. No team name. No photo. More often than not, no stats. No. I hope Panini planted a forest somewhere to recompense for wasting so much paper on these Triple Plays. No. ” -Doe MG

“ As Charles Barkley would say, "Turibule"! ” -carthage44

“ It's nice. I like it. ” -kirkscards

“ If this is the direction Panini is taking the hobby it is in serious trouble.. ” -bigdawg315

“ Yuck! One of my all-time least favorite card sets. ” -cckeith

“ Not really a fan of the art, no design of the uniform. ” -TradingCards964

“ I think what I hate most about these cards is that they used the Triple Play name. I loved those 90s sets. ” -jupiterhill

“ Triple Play is the worst. When cases come as cheap as $10, there is a reason. There are no redeeming qualities to this set. ” -ketchupman36

“ Simple....but I love it! ” -tbshaw

“ Oh boy the modern Triple Play Japanese cartoon cards. When I first saw these I really really hated them. The artwork is simple cartoonish. Oh and they have about 3 different cards for each player one of which has a puzzle back on it. At first I never wanted to have any of these, but with some trades and card gifts of my Homie teams I have gotten a few of these. Plus some of the repacks and boxes with random packs of cards with repacks include these sometimes so I couldn't avoid them. Not too thrilled about them but I think I will still keep and collect my Homie Nats and O's maybe some PC guys as well but not nearly the entire set. ” -captkirk42

“ I actually hate everything about this. Wow, if you were going to design a worse card of all time, this is it. I am amazed how bad this is. ” -muskie027

“ He looks about as filled in as his batting average has been the past few season. Not really a fan of unlicensed cards. ” -sahal694

This card is garbage! How much uglier can a card get??? Triple Play NEVER looked like that when Donruss made it. If Panini was going to make an unlicensed card, they could at least try to make it enticing. The best way this card could be better (besides having an MLB license and an actual photo) would be if they got comic book illustrators to make an accurate drawing of the player.

Said it before and I'll keep saying it, Panni should go back to making their junk sticker sets, because they suck at making cards.

I have often heard, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. So, every thought I have about this card and set:

. . .

Have a good day!

Wow, it looks like I am in the minority when I say this card is only slightly below collectible.  The back is terrible, but, while its not great, the front I think is halfway decent.  Look, at least Panini tried to make a set that was enticing to kids.  Yeah, the lack a license really hurts Panini's cards and this set's design in particular, but they did they best they could with what they had.  Remember, this was not supposed to be a super serious set where adults would rip through cases and cases looking for rare chase cards and try to finish sets -- this was a set for kids.  I believe they came at $1 per pack, which is fairly affordable.  If I had been a little younger when the set came out I may have bought some.

If those who hate it are having beef because they used the triple play name, then yeah, I get that, especially if you grew collecting in the early 90s when triple play was a great set for kids to collect.  I know if I had collected those early 90s triple play cards I would despise the Japanese-style animated images, because it would almost feel offensive to those who did collect this set back in the day.  But, ignoring the name of the set, I think it was an ok idea by Panini to try to get kids involved -- it just fell through, like Topps Attax did.

Chase, did you have a bad relationship w/ your dad?  Me too.  I like your hair.  I'm sure I can't throw as fast as me but I bet you would be impressed w/ my speed.  God I love "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"!

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

Yes, the set was geared towards kids (I hope), so don't hate it.  At least they are trying to get kids interested in collecting

When I was a kid (and I've been collecting non-stop since I was 4) I would have been very disappointed that they though I was not intelligent enough for a real card.
