Random Card of the Day

Year: 2001

Set: Press Pass Trackside - Die Cuts (Rate)

Card: #19 Ricky Craven

“ Nice shot of Craven. He was a class act and fun to watch race ” -ketchupman36

“ These die cuts came one per pack. A real pain to scan, which is why on the back there is not white but the gray of my open scanner tray. (my first scanner, which I did the front with, is too old to be recognized by my current computer, but it was the best scanner ever!) I'm one card short of the complete set, so there's that at least. Craven won the first of his two career wins in 2001, and now works for ESPN, or at least he did. Not sure if he survived the Purge of 2017. I believe Trackside was the first set of the year to include actual photography from 2001, but I can't remember for sure anymore. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ An overabundance of white on the borders, the outlines to the design and fonts, and from the uniform give one clear message: Tide whitens! ” -Sportzcommish

“ Because you didn't know his team's colors just by looking at the front... ” -DarkSide830

“ With Tide and Downey as sponsors he better have the cleanest, freshest gear on the track! ” -olerud363

“ Never really got into NASCAR cards, but this is a nice one. Not sure about the shape of the die cut, though. Might be better if they cut it in the shape of a track like Pocono or something. ” -mkaz80

“ "With Tide and Downy as sponsors, I have the freshest smelling clothes on the track". Against all reason, I actually like this faux-die-cut design. Maybe they should have moved the text into the white areas, to make it legible. ” -dilemma19

“ Nothing says "athlete" like a Tide logo on your "uniform". ” -carthage44

“ I know next to nothing about racing cards. I"m not a huge fan of die cuts. This is an OK card. ” -captkirk42

“ Clean! ” -cjjt

“ For some odd reason I get the urge to do laundry. ” -YoRicha

“ It would be really funny to see his jumpsuit dirty... #sponsorhumor ” -Brimose

“ Never was a big race fan. The card & Ricky's race suit remind me of the 80's Astros uniforms. ” -rmitchell6700

“ He's as orange as a certain President ” -Lennoxmatt

“ Dude sure does have clothes washing taken care of. Got the detergent and the softener. ” -RoyalChief

“ That reminds me. I have to go to the supermarket. ” -NJDevils

“ His uniform is so clean. I wonder what detergent he uses. ” -switzr1

Since so many don't know, I'll clear this up. The white area on the front is the die-cut part. There is no cardboard there! The back scan shows the die-cut area as gray. I actually really like the die-cut Trackside cards, even though I can't stand the base cards. I've never liked the Trackside brand, but the die-cut parallels were usually pretty nice.

I want to be a race car passenger: just a guy who bugs the driver. Say man, can I turn on the radio? You should slow down. Why do we gotta keep going in circles? Can I put my feet out the window? Man, you really like Tide...

-Mitch Hedberg

Man, do I miss Mitch, one of my favorite comedians of all time.

As for this card, eh. I'm not a fan of die cut and wasn't a big fan of Craven.  Not much of a fan of him on ESPN either, but I did like the Tide car, especially when Ricky Rudd was driving it.

I wonder what he's looking at?

Excellent quote! I miss Hedberg a bunch too. He was hilarious. The Tide car was eye-catching and a big part of the reason I started following and collecting Rudd. That car was so easy to spot, it was hard NOT to pay attention to it. I didn't care for it when Craven got the sponsorship though and then Rudd was driving the #28 car. I already collected Davey Allison, who also drove that car until his death, so it was nice to keep adding cards of that car.

Rudd's Tide car was the first Cup car I ever saw in person...sometime in 1994. Don't even have pictures of it. I saw the Tide showcars more than any other sponsorship, even when they moved to PPI.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.
