Set: Finest (Rate)

Card: #194 Ken Caminiti

“ Did anyone ever peel the protective film off of Finest from this era? I've never seen one without it. ” -rmpaq5

“ Not bad for a superimposed background. Has a Field of Dreams feel to it. ” -muskie027

“ Cool looking card. I hate those protectors, but at least it doesn't cover his face. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Aaaargh! Almost had an Astro on the RCOTD. Great action shot and fancy design. At first, though, I thought that was a Padres logo I hadn't seen before, but then after looking at other cards in the set I realized it was a glove. I'll be adding the Astros cards to my Want List - I have none of this set. ” -Sportzcommish

“ Gone too soon. ” -IfbBirdsCards

“ Steroids made him a very good player. ” -carthage44

“ I am not a huge fan of the Topps Finest, but I do prefer them over the Topps Chrome. ” -kents_stuff

“ One of my favorite Finest sets. Especially when the plastic is peeled off. ” -switzr1

“ Peel that thing off!! ” -RoyalChief

“ That's Peel and Remove. Not to be confused with Scratch and Sniff. =D ” -CollectingAfterDeath

“ Good player, died way too young though. ” -rmitchell6700

One of the few Finest designs I like.. Even if the field is superimposed in after taking the real thing out..

OH well my original post didn't post. Must have been my remark about not knowing what the thing under his name was and what I thought it looked like. I've said before that Bowman's Best and Topps Finest aren't always that. The years the use that protective covering now days is sort of a joke. There are pureists who keep the protective film on and others (the majoritiy of collectors I think) who say "RIP IT OFF". I think they usually look better without it but on the other hand can see the "keeping it as it was distributed" mentality. I think some have mentioned that it doesn't seem to effect grading results. That cards without the film have still been graded 9s or 10s

I am still trying to complete Series 2 of this set. Love the cards, and NO, I haven't pulled the film off any of them. Since they made a No-protector parallel, there really isn't a point to removing the film. At least for the '98 set.
