Random Card of the Day

As un-appealing as the '89 Fleer set is/was visually, it's also a very iconic set. When you see one, you KNOW it is 1989 Fleer. They topped that 2 years later with the ugly, yellow 1991 set. They may not have been pretty, but the Fleer designs stick with you for life! I loved their insert sets though, and still do. Even the stickers from the beginning of Fleers run in the 1980's still are pleasing. Ultra is still (to me) the best thing they ever made, but they got there by standing out from the crowd in the 80's. Without those beginning designs, they never would have been able to make Ultra, or Platinum, Tradition, Showcase, etc.. They are the top card company from the 80's/90's that I wish had survived through the mid-2000's crunch.

This was the year I graduated from college. I had returned a couple of years ago, but had been out for five years. and lived in married housing with a wife and two kids. One of my classmates also turned out to be a collector and  this was the set that we bonded over. Didn’t have a lot of money so it was nice to be able to do some trades and discuss our search for Billy Ripken cards.

While I prefer the asthetics of the 88 set, chasing Griffey and Ripken cards made this set awesome.  Especially as a kid who could only afford the .50c packs and not the $1 UD set.  

Nice thing about being a grown-up...I just went out and bought Ripken FF and the 89 UD set I couldn't get as a kid!
