Year: 1989

Set: Upper Deck (Rate)

Card: #286 Jimmy Jones

“ One of my favorite card designs. I remember people used to erase the name from the card fronts and try to sell them as "errors". ” -olerud363

“ Always a classic.....ordinary by today's standards, but still great. I remember the utter disbelief in spending $2 a pack..... ” -tbshaw

“ Nearly everything about this card makes me frown. The only nice thing is the large number. ” -NJDevils

“ Upper Deck's first set. Still one of my favorites. Great photos on the front and back of the cards. Everything is easy to read, from the team logo, position, and name. The only issue I have with 1989 Upper Deck is that it was so well done they basically reused the design with a few changes until 1994. ” -davidhandberry

“ That Starter jacket he is wearing on the back of the card is a real beauty. ” -Gunny

“ When i saw this I tried to figure out when San Diego ditched the pinstripes on their uniforms which led me to realizing that by the time this card was released Jones had been traded away to the Yankees, the team probably most associated with said pinstripes. ” -OCHawkeye

“ Who??? I'll pretend that the wide array of injuries which prevented him from finishing a season explains why I've never heard of Jimmy Jones. At least one good thing came out of this RCOTD -- in JJ's checklist I discovered a basketball card linked to this PID, now reassigned to the basketballer of the same name. 89UD was groundbreaking, expensive, and is still decent looking almost 30 years later. Wish they'd make licensed baseball cards again. ” -dilemma19

“ Classic set. Great pictures. ” -cjjt

“ one of the greatest sets of all time. Great photos great graphics, just the right mix of cost/value at the time. But not a clue who jimmy jones was. ” -parsley24

“ This set made collecting fun again. ” -Doe MG

“ I really liked the original UD set. I think they liked it too because the next 2 years had almost the same design. ” -IfbBirdsCards

“ Looking back, the photography across this set is not so great. I didn't like the limited stats on the back, but Upper Deck always nailed the back photos. ” -marcbrubaker

“ OK card, not amazing. I wish there wasn't so much white around the Padres symbol in the bottom right corner. Other than that I say it's a pretty good card ” -Jd_sports

“ Oh, I remember well when Upper Deck premeired. The hobby was all a buzz. Never before seen card quality. Holograms to ensure authenticity. Fancy foil packs. And what was considered at the time an outrageous price. ” -C2Cigars

“ Premiere Upper Deck Baseball YAY! Upper Deck upped the anti with the quality of cards... Oh OK perhaps Topps Stadium Club did it with the Kodak quality photos? ” -captkirk42

“ Jimmy Jones! Pitches so fast you'll freak! Oh wait, that's Jimmy Johns. Close enough. ” -jupiterhill

“ My kind of card right here! ” -RoyalChief

Somehow, missed this the day it was open for comments. You might want to divert your eyes - if you like this card (set). Front - Not too bad, but the position could have been a little bigger and clearer. It takes a magnifying glass to see the upside down SS on the Sheffield card. The UD logo is non-intrusive (good thing). Back - Horizontal stats with a vertical picture and bio - no, no, and please, no. Good thing about the backs - the number was big, clear, and in the same spot on all the cards (even the checklists). Just like their contempories (Donruss & Fleer), they made a ton of errors (intentional or not, not sure) that just seemed to be carelessness. If you're going to be charging double what everyone else is, there needs to be a reason. This set didn't give it back then. I like them better now.

Ok, vrooomed took care of the thing that bugged me most -- the vertical picture vs. horizontal stats on the back -- so I won't comment.
