Random Card of the Day

Year: 1971

Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #46 Dave Campbell

“ No team logo on the front. Facsimile signature. Incomplete stats on the back. Burn it. Seriously though, I'm curious to see how many people will overlook their usual complaints because it's "vintage". When I go to the shop to pick up a few 1950s-70s cards, this is a set I never even look at. ” -switzr1

“ Great set. Could be better if it wasn't for the black borders and the chipping. ” -KMack

“ This would have been perfect without the phony autograph...at least it's not over his face! Was this the first Topps baseball set to include a photo on the back? ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Love the old school SD logo ” -ketchupman36

“ If I owned the Padres, day one the team would be going back to these colors and this version of the interlocking SD cap logo. Oh, great looking card as well. ” -Gunny

“ A classic Topps set. Always liked the facsimile signature on the cards, too. ” -jayoneill

“ Finally a classic. ” -carthage44

“ Classic! Always loved this design, minus the challenge of finding sharp corners. ” -tbshaw

“ Ahhh....after today's horsie picture card (go back a week) much better. ” -rmpaq5

“ Nice! Year after the O’s won their second WS in 4 years. Kind of a simple design but it definitely works. ” -IfbBirdsCards

“ Ahhhhh. My first year of collecting cards. 5 years old. My dad bought me pack of 4th series cards--Aurelio Rodriguez, Carl Morton, Tim McCarver, Ken Harrelson, Jim Perry, Steve Huntz, Cesar Geronimo, Angels team, Bob Didier, Jose Cardenal, John Stephenson. I can't remember the rest. It would be some time before I finished the set (maybe 1976). Dave Campbell would be a late comer to my set. ” -cjjt

“ Ah sweet Vintage Baseball from my youth. Pretty sure I have this card, or I did have it back in the day. 1971 is another of the zillion Topps Flagship sets I need to "complete". That is a nice example of the '71s no edge chipping which is a very common occurrence for this set. ” -captkirk42

“ Very nice card. The black border cards are really tough to find and keep in mint condition. ” -NJDevils

“ GO PADRES! GREATEST. TEAM. EVER! ” -YoRicha

“ YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!! Awesome card, awesome set. I wish I had me some. It has been awhile since we had something this cool on RCOTD. And recently we had a forum thread on this set too. Love it!!!! ” -muskie027

“ I hate to say it but this is my least favorite card year. But only because with the black frame it makes it extremely difficult to find cards in great condition. ” -Joshua825

I do believe you are correct Billy, first Topps with back photo and what's even more amazing that a back photo wouldn't appear on the Topps series again until 1993 according to the Topps homepage...Known by many as the "Black Bordered Beauties" or simply the "Men in Black" I seem to remember this set as being near the top of Mzentko's favorites as well. A challenge to say the least to find in top condition.

Nice simple design. Always liked the facsimile signatures. The drawback in collecting is, of course, the black border.

I actually like the black border and the lower case printing.

Well, Switz, I don't need a logo on front and I don't mind the facsimile auto. (i also don't mind the black borders). But the incomplete stats on the back is what knocks this set down a few notches in my rankings. Because I'm pretty consistent with that. I spend way less time absorbing the back of the card because I can't review the players' progession in their career. Makes me a little sad. This set was also a bear to complete, what with high number thing.

Um, to the guy who remembered most of his first pack of cards: whoa, that's scary.

Not one of my fave sets. that black border is almost impossible to find in really good shape.

Nice to see a classic. Those that don't like it can have their Panini Chrome Coated Serial Numbered trash...and burn them.

I don't mind the black border, the only thing I'm not feeling is how the signature is situated.  Other than that, its a fine card.

Not the Best card in the set that distinction belongs to card # 502  For just overall coolness and Uniqueness. As a matter of fact card # 502 was basically just duplicated in the 1972 Topps sets. For as far as sets go 71' is the BEST ! Especially because of the easily chipped borders or bad off centering / miscut cards it makes it a REAL CHALLENGE to make this set in HIGH GRADE Condition !

Got my collection kind of split up in 3 places in two seperate states. So  I am willing to trade but might take me a bit to find the cards from my Trade / Sell list. So please message me first so that I can take some time to find the cards you would be interested in. Whether it's an hour or 2 months or etc. I would get back to you after locating the card or cards.

Looking at the Dave Campbell cards in the database, I see there are 2 cards from 1978 and 1979 that are of a different Dave Campbell.  I'm guessing these sets have been locked down and 'verified' therefore this is why I can't simply change it. I added a new Dave Campbell (PID 184599) that the 1978 and 1978 Topps cards need to be associated with.

Thanks!
