Year: 1999

Set: UD Choice (Rate)

Card: #103 Jose Valentin

“ Interesting how much this set looks like the Collector's Choice set it replaced...seeing them back to back on Card of the Day really hammers that home. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Loved him when he came to the White Sox. ” -carthage44

“ The info bars are a little blocky on the bottom. great photo. Not a fan of the opposing rounded corners. The back is fine if i could read it. ” -parsley24

“ OK two days in a row with a "Collectors" Choice card except this one doesn't say "Collector's" on it but it is the same set concept only later years. I'm not big on the landscaped (horizontal) cards but this one uses it to the advantage of the photo being used. Back is pretty good. ” -captkirk42

“ Not a bad looking card, for some reason it reminds me of 1992 Topps. Not a big fan of the small first name or the lowercase letter starting the names. Just like with Collectors Choice, I think the logo cheapens the look, although, I like this better than the Collector's Choice. Would rather just see the UD logo. The back is what I would tend to like to see, but for some reason, has a congested look. Overall, not bad, but could use a few improvements. ” -muskie027

“ Nice action picture. ” -kirkscards

“ Great picture. ” -cjjt

Upper Deck ruined Collector's Choice with the UD Choice brand. 1998 and 1999 UDC look almost exactly the same. That wasn't really a problem with Collector's Choice. Every year had a different look. I was originally really excited for 1998 UD Choice and really liked it when it 1st released. Then 1999 came out and looked exactly the same! I didn't care after that and neither did the other fans. UD Choice died then and Collector's Choice would never come back. Upper Deck killed a great brand by re-branding it when it really shouldn't have been done in the first place.

Good action shot however again not a fan of only part of the player in the shot. As well the back does appear to be a little busy.

One thing about this UD Choice design...it was used in multiple sports, by the way... it was the first set that required you to go on the internet to get the answers for the trivia questions. This was at a time when many people did not have internet access, including myself. By time we got our first computer in 2000, the UD website didn't mention these at all, or at least I couldn't find it. There were actually some NBA trivia questions I didn't and still don't know the answer to, as some of them were time specific and are no longer correct due to the passage of years and new records being set. I could figure them out using basketball reference but have not gotten bored enough yet, lol.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.
