Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #350 Garry Templeton

“ Good looking card! ” -trauty

“ It's been a while since we have had a Topps flagship card come up. Surprising considering how many people consider that the be all end-all of the hobby. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I did not realize Garry Templeton played so long. I remember him from late 80's, early 90's cards when he was with the Padres. I like the nostalgia of the 79 set but being objective I get tired of all the white borders on cards and the green on black on the back makes those parts a little difficult to read. ” -davidhandberry

“ Great pose in front of a great background. ” -carthage44

“ Classic design, one of my favorites. But this photo. Dear god, i would hate to see the photos that didnt make it. ” -parsley24

“ Irony - clicking on the link to see this card's page - and seeing the 1979 Topps set's sample image together with this. Templeton continued to be a very good SS although his BA fell off drastically once he hit SD. Additionally, this was my first set I put together from packs, so I naturally have a soft spot for any cards from it. ” -vrooomed

“ Very nice Pre-1980 vintage Baseball. It looks like Garry is making some kind of bird call. Well he was on the Cardinals at the time. ” -captkirk42

“ Great player who struck out too much. Traded for Ozzie Smith. Templeton batted over 300 numerous times. ” -cjjt

“ "I got traded for who?" ” -Splinter_9

“ Love the set and love this card. The bricks behind him make what would normally be a boring card really cool. ” -muskie027

I have this card, but every STL fan knows the best card in that set is the Ozzie Smith RC. I guess the Padres fans know it too. I still like the set for its' simplicity in design and layout. I was an infant when these were 1st released, so they still hold a special place in my collection. I think Garry was watching Lou Brock steal another base when this pic was taken!!!

Just seeing this card pop up made me go and (slightly) increase my ranking of the 1979 set. Clean design, lots of cards in the set, and all the information I want on the front and back. Sigh, it was a time before social media accounts existed, so they had room for all that stuff.

At the time of the trade, I thought Templeton was better than Ozzie Smith. At that time, he may have been....

"Is that a UFO?" Either that or someone just hit one out.
