I disagree with the "magazines give us a lot of bad information in the late 80s" line. They gave us what we were looking for before anyone realized how over-produced the cards were then. I graduated from High School in 1996 and so my middle-school years were the worst period of card over-production in the history of cards. BUT, didn't that era get most of us into collecting cards in the 1st place?!!! 1987 to 1992 was horribly over-produced, but 1993 to 1998 inserts are a spectacular find nowadays. 1993 Topps/Donruss/Fleer/Score/Upper Deck base cards were easy to obtain back then along with Leaf, Stadium Club, Pinnacle, and Ultra. What are the hard-to-find 1993 cards? Inserts from those sets AND 1993 Finest and 1993 SP. This was the beginning of the Premium/Ultra-Premium card sets! That was the dawn of what we currently hold dear to our hearts! If the "Junk Wax" era never happened, then the 2nd golden age of cards (the mid-late 90's and early 2000's) would have never happened either!!! Unfortunately, we are apparently back in a "Junk Wax" situation thanks to MLB linking exclusively with Topps.
As soon as the MLB adds some competition for Topps, I think we'll see some great cards being made again, cards we will want to chase/buy. It looks like Panini is the next step to compete with Topps. UD could only compete if they pick up the NASCAR license and do well with it. I don't see the new Leaf brand making a splash in any way. The new MLB card industry will need to add Panini to the Topps dynasty to be profitable. The top 2 companies battling each other is what the MLB needs in trading cards! It is only a win-win for the MLB. That's just my two-cents!
NO PWE's EVER!!! PLZ PM me 1st before sending any offer. ONLY selling cards as of March 2024. No trades or purchases right now.
