Random Card of the Day

Year: 1989

Set: Upper Deck (Rate)

Card: #361 Keith Moreland

“ I like this design. First UD set if I remember correctly. Would still be a few years before they came into the NBA, and a few more years beyond that that I would discover the NBA's existence. I like the earlier UD sets better, simply because they are large sets. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I really disliked the layout of UD's card backs. They were one of the first companies to provide limited stats on the back, which as a kid I found incredibly annoying. ” -UNC_Samurai

“ Hey, UD, pictures on the front and stats on the back, please. Do not need an excess of photos. Again, dont like turning the card to read the stats. ” -NJdevils

“ Nice brown and orange Padres. ” -jlaz10

“ What a brown card. ” -marcbrubaker

“ Nice set with decent photo quality. Moreland was a blast to watch at Wrigley. ” -SYTopps

The '89 Upper Decks were a turning point in the card indusrty and were aesthetically gorgeous, but I agree the partial stats on the back are annoying.  Baseball fans are first and foremost stat lovers, and we like the career data and other facts on the back of the cards almost as much (if not more) than the photos on the front.

Donruss had been doing this since 1981 (partial stats on the back).

I didn't get many Fleer cards in the 80s, but I liked that I could read Minor League stats from veteran players like Rose or Ryan, where as in Topps you didn't get Minor League stats if a player had four (i think) seasons in the Majors

If I remember correctly, weren't all the cards in the pack inserted in different ways? Or am I thinking of 90 Upper Deck? Either way, it was Upper Deck and it was really annoying to "sort" the cards before I looked at them.

@jb31 - That was 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992.... Upper Deck. I didn't open any in 1993 and beyond, so I don't know, but they probably were that way then too. I opened enough of those 4 years to know for sure they were all 4 directions they can be. Just looking through a pack was annoying. Now Topps does that. Well, at least they aren't face down in the stack, but the top of the card at the bottom can be plenty annoying.

Donruss was the one who started that "recent baseball stats" on the back.     Topps usually had all the stats including minors.   The only time Topps excluded the minors was if a player was in his 20th year or something and they just couldnt fit any more lines.

Yeah, I remember Nolan Ryan having a book on the back of  his 1980's cards. The last 10 years would suffice.

If you want to see a nice back of a card, all with one team,  look at 1963 Topps #250.  Nuff said.
