Random Card of the Day

Year: 2001

Set: Upper Deck Legends (Rate)

Card: #13 Jim Thome

“ This is a great card design, but active players shouldn't be in Legends sets unless they are so incredibly important to the game that it would be an affront to exclude them, IE, Michael Jordan when he was active. I don't know enough about baseball to know if this card should exist or not. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Thome played from 1991-2012 with the Indians, Phillies, White Sox, Dodgers, Twins and Orioles. Career: .276 AVG, 2,328 Hits, 612 HR and 1,699 RBI. He was a five-time All-Star, won the Silver Slugger Award in 1996, won the Roberto Clemente award in 2002 and was the American League Comeback Player of the Year in 2006 with the White Sox. He is currently a special assistant to the general manager with the White Sox. ” -carthage44

“ Legends?? Jim Thome? Of what one of the most overrated players ever? All hail the legend of mediocrity. ” -addysdaddy

“ RIP Chief Wahoo ” -jlaz10

If Jim Thome is overrated then so is Babe Ruth...

And Wayne Gretzky or Bobby Orr, if you feel like playing like that.  Everyone is entitled to an opinion.  You are entitled to not like it.

Quite honestly... Legend whilst still playing?  no.  Babe Ruth is dead.  THERE is a LEGEND

If that's mediocrity I wonder what to make of Jeffrey Hammonds, Miguel Tejada and Brian Giles, all of which are also on the set.

I'm not saying he isn't a good player, that's obvious because he played so long. What I was saying is that just because you played that long doesn't qualify you as a legend. His career stats will never get him into the HOF, baseball writers will pass him over year after year. The will always give credit to his longevity and his abutting to hit in clutch but other than his home run total what is there? .262 average will not put him through he is 672 hits shy of the standard "3000 hits = HOF status" . He is a 5x All Star and one time Silver Slugger award winner. I might be 100% wrong on this because I'm not an expert but I don't see him being in the HOF nor a legend. That's just my opinion folks, don't ding up my corners so much.

Always admired Thome.   I think his accomplishments were without the use of steroids unlike Sosa and the whole bunch.   A "Legend", no.    But card companies always do this to push their product.    Oh, Thome didnt "cork" like Sosa did either.

No question Thome is a Hall of Famer as he played the game the right way. Addy, his career average was .276 like I posted not .262 like you stated. Also, 3,000 hits in not the only requirement to get into the Hall. He is one of the best power hitters on all-time and his 612 career home runs reflect that. He should be a first ballot Hall of Famer but if for whatever reason he is not, he will be in within 2 or 3 years.

There are alot of players in the HOF with a lesser BA than Thome. They include Cal Ripken (same as Thome) Ernie Banks, Mike Schmidt, Eddie Mathews, Joe Morgan, Willie McCovey, Carlton Fisk, Johnny Bench, Brooks Robinson, Reggie Jackson, and Harmon Killibrew,  A number of them have less hits than Thome and ALL of them have less homers.

Jim Thome is 19th in career OPS, 24th in slugging, 52nd in OBP, 7th in career HRs, 7th in walks, 20th in Extra Base Hits, 4th! in AB per HR (1 every 13.8)

If you want a recent inductee that is similar to Thome.. how about Frank Thomas. Thomas has a 24 point higher BA  but less than 100 more hits and Thome has close to 300 more HRs. All the rest of their stats are very close to each other. And Thome spent more time in the field (versus DH) than Thomas did.

MightyOX, slight correction. Thome did not have close to 300 HRs more than Frank Thomas. Thome had 612 career HRs and Thomas had 521. So by my calculations, Thome had 91 more HRs than Thomas. I would not say that is close to 300 more but close to 100 more HRs Thome had than Thomas. It could have been a misprint on your part or our ideas of rounding up are much different, LOL!

Regardless of whether you consider him a legend or not, this card was produced in 2001.  He was no legend yet in 2001, that's for sure.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
