Year: 1985

Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #282 Marcus Allen

“ Black border cards are not fun at all to scan. Always shows every speck of dust on the scanner tray (and how does dust make it's way to the middle of the bottom of the tray?) and also they tend to chip easily. But they do look pretty cool. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Loved these cards but so many (like this one) were printed way off center. The back is the best park of the card, CLASSIC! ” -carthage44

“ Could have been the greatest ” -SFC Temple

“ 1971 baseball all over again - at least in terms of border. I'm not a fan of the type going one way, and the photo going another. The photo is almost square anyway - rotate, and make the card vertical. Back is fine. ” -vrooomed

“ This is an absolutely awful set not only in visual layout, but an insanely high percentage of the cards are cut off-center. ” -UNC_Samurai

“ "Now let's take one where you seem really disinterested... PERFECT!" ” -jackal726

“ Very odd name arrangement. Also, great silver Rayduhz helmet. ” -jlaz10

“ I loved this layout. Big, simple, and commanding. Perfect for football. Baseball or hockey, not so much. ” -Howintensive

Black borders are terrible.   This set shows every nick which would be unnoticeable on most cards.   Looks like their template for cutting lines was obstructed by the black borders and they had no way of cutting them straight.

The off center look is also accentuated by the fact that the scan is in itself crooked slightly...you can see it clearly on the top right on both front and back images. Topps was still having these off center issues as late as 2003, possibly later.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

Yearly designs by Topps had been stale for years, so these black boarders were a nice change of pace. Quality control had to be non-existent because I have several with mismatched backs. Backs printed in the wrong position in relation to the fronts and some with the wrong back altogether.

@whoisrob - Those are most likely caused by the sheets being flipped the wrong way when printing. If you compare the wrong backs (or mis-matched alignment backs) with correct cards, the text on the backs will probably go in the opposite direction.

@vroomed-- you mentioned that you didn't like how you have a picture going one way and the name going the other.  I'm fine with that AS LONG AS the name is oriented the same as the back when you put the card in a binder or penny sleeve.  I really hate cards like this one: http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/5495/cid/1241868/1998-99-O-Pee-Chee-Chrome-168-Kris-Draper

I thought I had this card.  I had to click it to find out I didn't.

I love this set, though.  I found a bunch of cards from this set at a flea market a couple years back, and I grabbed most of the names I could recognize including a few Warren Moons.

@Howintensive: Yes, the Draper card drives me crazy too (we have lots of Red Wings cards, my wife is a fan - became a fan when Steve Yzerman was drafted, and has loved them since - even after Stevie Y). Last year, Topps baseball had an insert set called Chasing History which had some cards veritcal and some horizontal. Backs were all vertical. Putting them in 9-card pages, Series 1 horizontal cards oriented with the bottom on the left side, while the Series 2 cards oriented the bottom on the right. So, to have all the cards be "upright" on the reverses, they go two different directions on the front. OCD kicks in.
