Random Card of the Day

Sunday, October 5, 2014

Year: 1989

Set: O-Pee-Chee Stickers - Super Star Backs (Rate)

Card: #10 Tony Fernandez

“ This looks like the back of the card is posted as the front...I'm sure there's a reason for this, but I don't know what it is. The back is more interesting than the front...or I should say the side shown as Card of the Day is more interesting, anyway. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ The AL had a glut of good shortstops from 1985-1995. Fernandez and Trammell were always sort of in Ripken's shadow when All-Star time rolled around. ” -DaClyde

“ Nice way of making garbage collectible. ” -vrooomed

“ Three beautiful uniforms! The Jays combination of blue jersey and powder blue pants is horrible and amazing at the same time. ” -jlaz10

“ Every bit as good as Ozzie Smith, and better offensively. Fernandez had 66 more HR's, 51 more RBI's and his batting avg was 26 points higher, all with 1,485 fewer at bats than Ozzie Smith had. And yet the Hall of Fame voting was: Fernandez = 0.7%. Smith = 91.7%. Guess all those back flips paid off in the end. ” -Id8jlb8666

Really, ld8....?  Fernandez was great, but the two weren't close. No one in history had more assists at shortstop than Smith. And I'm not s sabermetrics guy, but it could really shorten the conversation if you compare WARs. It just isn't close.  Those backflips punctuated probably the best fielding shortstop in history. Certainly in the 40+ years I've been watching the game. When that elusive Hall of Very Good finally gets created (it almost had been if you find the List of underrated rookie cards on this site), Fernandez can join. Besides, look at his eyes on this card. He's shocked to even be on the field.

I agree.....I'll take The Wizard any day over Fernandez - despite the back flips.

That's not shock, that's intensity! Alright fellas, I will concede that Ozzie was a better fielder, but I'd still take Fernandez at the plate. Couldn't tell you why but I've always liked Fernandez more for some reason.

I agree with id8 that Fernandez never got enough love but Ozzie was a far superior fielder and was clutch at the plate.
