Stadium Club always had a nice clean, full bleed design. There wasn't much creativity behind it, but it was always good quality.

Full-bleed cards allowed the companies to be more lax on the quality control as far as centering goes. It's much harder for the "naked eye" to see a full-bleed design that's off-center (unless it's really bad). In the dawning of graded cards, I think some companies decided to use full-bleed to help maintain higher grades. (Personal opinion.)
