Year: 1979

Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #154 Brian Baschnagel

“ I hate 1970s Topps football because they only had the contract for the players, and not the teams. Thus, they could not show emblems. Fleer owned the rights to the team emblems. So annoying. ” -cjjt

“ 19 different schools? I thought I got moved around a lot. I didn't attend the same school for consecutive full years until 6th & 7th grades. But 19 is crazy! Oh yeah, I like the card too. ” -switzr1

“ Classic Topps. Been collecting Topps FB since 1969, what am I going to collect in 2016? ” -Kaline6

“ I had some of these back in the day. Back when people heard you collected cards and would hand you whatever they found. I had FB, hockey, E.T., and probably others and sold most of them to classmates. Don't remember this particular player - at all. ” -vrooomed

“ love the vintage.. plus he's got the Darth Vader look going ” -tonym

“ You can't spell Baschnagel without B-A-G-E-L. Actually, despite starting with five of the letters (in the correct order), I still have problems spelling Baschnagel. 3 years into his NFL career, and I see that young Brian was already digging deep for "fun facts" card-back material... ” -dilemma19

“ This is the set that started my affliction. I'm not sure how I wound up with them; parents picked them up at a garage sale I suppose. I would sit for hours, just flipping through them, reading the stats and narratives. I didn't really know what it all meant, but I loved em. ” -SFC Temple

“ Love this set! Brings back lots of memories of my love of NFL football in my youth and my love of trading card collecting! ” -bkklaos

“ Cool Vintage/semi-vintage Football. I know next to nothing about this guy. I do like the cards with the airbrushed helmets. As a kid I didn't know the reason for them being like that I just thought is was because all the photos for cards were taken pre-season and they were practice helmets since they didn't bother to put the logo stickers on them. Ha it was because of weird copyright laws/rules. Yet back then they could use the team nicknames. Today no license no logos OR names. ” -captkirk42

“ TIGHT!!! ” -carthage44

“ I like the card. Even though he was on Injured Reserve the entire 1985 season he still got a Super Bowl ring. ” -C2Cigars

“ I sorta like the to-the-point design. ” -DarkSide830

For about three years, I had a dalliance with football and basketball cards, and I'm certain I had this one. I have absolutely no idea what I did with those cards, and almost regret going all baseball. Almost.

Great set, wish I had saved more of them. At the time the no logo really turned me against them.

Nice job on the front.   Horrible Laker purple and gold on a gray back ground makes me, to quote Fred Sandford, "wanna burp".

As a Browns fan, I never really noticed the no logos thing...  Our helmets were fine.   ;)

My first year of collecting FB cards was 1982, also the first year Topps could use logos.  So when I came across older cards, I just assumed that 1982 was the first year the teams had logos on helmets, and the Browns just stuck with their "1981 helmets".  I apparently hadn't started watching football on TV until 1982 either.

Off topic, but speaking of the Browns, about a year ago, my Mom said something about the Browns' orange helmets.  I asked her what she was talking about.  As I've mentioned countless times, I'm colorblind, so I had always (I'm 41 years old) assumed that their helmets were brown.  Nobody had ever told me they were orange. (I'm still not 100% convinced).  I totally would have lost on Jeopardy with that one!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
