Year: 2007

Set: Topps - Josh Gibson Home Run History (Rate)

Card: #JG59 Josh Gibson

“ Neat card. Good history. Would have worked better if he had played in the era of photographers everywhere, every game, but the concept is sound. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I read about this guy. AMAZING!!! ” -carthage44

“ Ugly front. the bottom panel with the 460 is too dark hard to read the number even though it takes up a third of the card. The 'photo' (painting? actually) should be the whole front with the 460 on top of it and a little smaller. Lets check the back... the info that is there is OK but the picture should be where the 460 is and the 460 shouldn't be its own logo. A headline yes, a "picture" or text box NO. ” -captkirk42

“ WOW!! Great little bio on the back....I wonder how much stats and records would be different if the likes of Gibson, and Satchel Paige played. ” -RoyalChief

I like the idea. I agree with previous comments that the 460 is out of control. And, I'm sorry, but I don't get the 460. If that number is going to be so prominently featured, can someone please tell me what it means? Is this supposed to be a depiction of his 460th homerun? If so, that's complete BS. I feel confident that no one has any idea when Josh Gibson hit his 460th homerun. The stat keeping was erratic and the leagues were ever-changing, so this is totally made up. Unless the 460 is something I'm not getting at all. But I do wish baseball had integrated in about 1865 and stayed that way, so we'd have all these stats and comparisons from great ball players like this.

But nice concept for a card, and I like the art.

This insert set really made no sense to me. Yes he hit a pantload of HR's, but, 110 identical cards (other than a different HR number), all with the same pic and bio? Topps did this with Mantle and a couple of steroid users also, though I think their cards had a little more info about the longballs they hit. I am sure these subsets are a nice challenge to collect, but not much to enjoy looking at, from my viewpoint.....Eleven days until opening day.

Turning off trading because my collection is in complete disarray after moving and I don't know when I can get it organized.
