Random Card of the Day

Year: 1997

Set: Pinnacle Mint Collection - Coins (Rate)

Card: #06 Ricky Rudd

“ Technically, this is a medal. A coin is something only issued for monetary purposes. Pinnacle called them coins though so the Database listing is correct...the card company wasn't. Doesn't look much like Ricky. I still remember getting one of these for the first time. The base cards come with a hole you are presumably to put the coin into, but the cards are very thin and the coin is the thickness of at least 8 to 10 of the base cards...so needless to say it didn't work well. While the basic versions like this one are brass, there are also supposedly silver and gold versions, though I have not ever seen any. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Is a coin a card? I guess if they were part of a card set, then sure. They look cool, but I am honestly not much of a coin collector. Not sure how I feel about it. ” -muskie027

“ This does not interest me. I realize it did come in a pack of cards, and technically belongs here, but no thanks. ” -switzr1

“ Ricky Rudd, defiantly a NASCAR name. ” -carthage44

“ Is this coin legal tender in Talladega? ” -DaClyde

“ It's not a card or a sticker. I'll pass. ” -deporcoruña

“ Wow a NON Card Random "Card" of the Day. A Racing Coin. Ah no wonder I didn't recall this product I don't follow racing. ” -captkirk42

“ My first formal organized collection was a coin collection, so I have always enjoyed the novelty of Pinnacle's combination of cards and medallions in this product. I think the novelty would have worn off if the concept lasted more than two releases though. ” -Lea DeFoote

“ Nice. Fun to see a non-card pop up for the card of the day. I believe these came in packs with cards that they could be placed in. I have some of the football. Didn't know they had sets other than football. ” -Mitch

“ To paraphrase Kipling, "cards are cards and coins are coins; and never the twain shall meet." I believe that sums up my stance on coins in the database. ” -C2Cigars

“ Random COIN of the Day - I guess it was only a matter of time before one of these found it's way in. We got some of the hockey ones. I wasn't too excited about the prospect of card AND coin parallels, especially ones that were so rare. Still not. ” -vrooomed

“ Gee, what a nice "trading card" for the "trading card" database. And yet, schedules aren't allowed unless it's one particular team. Would make a great addition to a trading coin database. ” -hphillips

Sorry to say I see a double standard set here. As other members have already posted, WHY IS THIS COIN IN THE DATABASE?

Admin has stated in the past regarding the Pinnacle Mint coins that due to these being issues with an actual card set, they should be included here. If anyone wants to comb through the forum posts to find the exact wording, I'm pretty sure it was said during 2016, but could go back to 2015. I'm pretty sure it was stated within the last 2 years.

I remember this too. Makes sense to me. Obviously they are a unique circumstance and I do understand the debates from both sides on the issue. I have a couple of the packs still that the football cards/coins came in. Ended up getting some in a collection I bought. Don't think I would have bought them any other way.

We traditionally include items inserted into card packs, whether medallions, puzzle pieces, pogs, foldout posters, punchout paper bobbleheads, ruboff tattoos, whatever.  I see no double standard. These were inserted into a pack of cards.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Just when I think I'm gettng to be too anal retentive and OCD, a thread like this comes along and reaffirms me of my sanity.  As I've said before, the value of this site is increased expontentially by the inclusion of non-traditional items, be they coins, pins, photos, posters, etc.  You can find lots of websites with 1988 Donruss baseball CARD checklists.

Doesn't a card come with Starting Lineup figures?

These were inserts in packs of cards. It isn't rocket science.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

I completely agree with switzr1 and Billy. These were an item in EACH pack of Pinnacle Mint cards, be they NFL/MLB/NASCAR, etc. They were inserted in packs and in this case, EVERY pack had one of these coins. I have many of the MLB "coins" and a couple of the NASCAR ones. As for NASCAR, these would also be the same as the "Poker Chips" inserted in 2009 Wheels Main Event or even the 2010 Wheels Main Event Dog Tags that were inserted in every blaster box.. They aren't traditional items, but they should all be listed b/c they were in packs or boxes of cards.

As for the cards in SLU and McFarlane figures, the cards should be listed if there is a steady presence of the loose cards being on the secondary market (cards that were removed from the figure package). In NASCAR, many die-cast cars came with cards too. Most of those type of cards that are listed here were cards from the small-scale cars (1/64th scale). Those blister-packs were busted open by children so they could play with the cars, but the cards were kept safe by someone (child or parent). SLU's and McFarlane figures are less likely to have been opened and had the cards (or other items) removed and kept safe. I don't see any reason the cards from those figures shouldn't be part of the database, except that it would be difficult to ever get the scans complete b/c most of those cards are still in the packaging! SLU cards from 1989 to about 1995 would be almost impossible to even find and most cards after that are still in the packaging.

Just my 2 cents here.
