Year: 1987

Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #155 Eddie Whitson

“ Hard believe that Willie Nelson's career started before Eddie Whitson's playing career and is still going. Neat "old" Topps card. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Fitting that 1987 Topps shows up with 17 Topps going heavy on the 87 throwbacks ” -ketchupman36

“ Ahhh the original of Topps recent favourite design to continually reuse. I did get a chuckle with the personal fact, can just picture "You Were Always on my Mind" blasting in the clubhouse before one of his starts to get him pumped up. ” -rmpaq5

“ I will go as far to say this is the flagship set of my generation. Who doesn't love this set? Everything about it just brings me back to youth. Design was great, stats are great, backs are great! This might not be the most beautiful set, but I think it might be my favorite. ” -muskie027

“ Wow an actual 1987 Topps card. Not a 2011 or was it 2012? Mini, Not a 2013, 14, 15, 16 archives. Not even some sort of bizarre tribute card, but a real live 1987 card. Love it. ” -captkirk42

“ I go back and forth on the'87 set primarily over the wood grain border. I agree with the probable use as the appearance of a framed masterpiece, and all other elements of a trading card blend in well, so my teetering probably deals with the photography more than anything else. ” -Sportzcommish

“ My dad says these are one of the worst Topps designs of all time, I can sum this set up in one word, "meh" ” -JoshReese92099

“ I love the 1987 Topps set. ” -Mitch

“ Love the wood! ” -carthage44

“ Good to know that Ed listens to Willie Nelson music. I always wondered about that. ” -NJDevils

“ I definitely prefer the wood grain style of the 1961 Topps over this. ” -CluelessJoe

“ Love this card design! I'll never forget in 1990 trading an '87 Topps Will Clark straight up for a '90 Upper Deck John Olerud. Good times! ” -olerud363

“ One of the worst designs ever! Hate it. ” -cjjt

Will never forget the infamous Cross Keys Inn fight between the hot tempered Tennesseean Eddie Whitson, and Battlin' Billy Martin in 1985.

Martin came away with a broken arm from a karate kick by Whitson, and for years afterwards, Ed refused to sign any cards that portrayed him with the Yankees.- Banny

CKBeber329 - Contact me if you want those two cards - I have them.

Anyone else looking for the complete set - I have a couple extras. Would be willing to trade (or sell). I put them together back in 1987 myself.

CluelessJoe - You mean 1962 not 61. Must have been a typo.

On the fence, as well. Wood grain is nice, but is a pale attempt to honor 1962. Kind of dull front and you must have the player's position on the front. The back is perfect.

'87T is has to be one of the all-time greatest baseball card sets ever.  I know it was mass-produced, but it also came out during a time when people were starting to treat cards like stocks, so they were hoarding this stuff.  The design is very familiar to collectors from every era, and represents a time when a lot of new collectors came into the hobby.  I vaguely remember Eddie Whitson during the Padres' 1984 World Series run.

I very much remember him from the 1984 World Series run, which went through the Cubs -- the first time I'd seen them in the playoffs. And the time when, due to t.v. and the lack of lights at Wrigley, the Cubs were forced to give up their well-earned home field advantage to San Diego. Cubs won the two home games they did get, but lost the next three in San Diego. Whitfield won game three. Sigh.

1986 and 1987 was when I really started collecting cards. This is the first set I ever completed by hand, and I cannot help but hold a special fondness for it. At the time, it was a unique design, at least compared to other Topps designs from the late 80's/early 90's. It stood out. Count me among the fans - I love that woodgrain!

1987 was the first set I really collected, but as the years have passed, it has dulled greatly in my eyes.  No position on front, ComicSans names, lots blurry photos.  1987, '88 & '89 were real throwbacks in card design, where it seemed like the Topps designers were trying to remember how to design baseball cards again after the two rough designs of 1985 & 1986.  1990 showed that they had learned nothing, and I have to assume 1991 represented a new design team.

The 1987 set is wrapped in nostalgia, both due to the 1962-influenced design and due to having such a great rookie and sophomore class, but I'm no longer a fan of the design.
