Set: Upper Deck Documentary (Rate)

Card: #831 Barry Zito

“ I guess since it is a set called documentary, my joke about it looking like a documentary instead of a card isn't as funny as it is obvious. Given that its intent is to be informative, I guess it works. Not sure I like the concept, but if that is what you are going for, it actually is a nice card. ” -muskie027

“ Ah, the Topps Now precursor. I like it. ” -Doe MG

“ a bit bland on the front ” -Starblazer

“ Nice looking card from a very silly set or more accurately a set that would be a set collector's nightmare. Way way way too large a set to chase. Each team has at least 163 cards in the set one for each game plus a season summary card so that gives you a general idea of how big the set is. The grand total is 4,954 cards in the set. Not to mention the "Gold" parallel set and 3 insert sets All-Star game 55 cards, Home Run Derby 5 cards and Seasonal Signatures 60 cards. So yeah Set Collector's gonna hate. Whenever they repeat a player in the set they use the same photo on the front just change the game the card is talking about. Upper Deck was probably trying to out do Topps Total but I think they failed. Come to think about it maybe they set the stage for the Topps Now physical sets. ” -captkirk42

“ This set is way to big for a collector to collect the whole thing. Even if you're a team collector it is hard to collect just your team's set. ” -TheToddFather21

“ Ugh! This set was such a terrible idea. Ambitious, but terrible. ” -cckeith

I really liked the concept of this set, and yes it was a massive set, but I still liked the idea.  Where it fell flat was having a gold parallel set as well.  No need for collector's to chase a similar set just because it had a touch of gold.  That wasn't the biggest problem though.  As others said, they kept using the same photos repeatedly.  I would be okay if they would rotate like 5 photos from a player, but I try to collect the Royals and the Pujols cards, and EVERY FREAKING PUJOLS IS THE SAME PHOTO!  I would have loved to see a photo from that exact game they were talking about, but I'm sure that would have cost a ton of money.  Even if they just used a few different photos that would have made it better.  Another thing that messed up on was sometimes the player on the card didn't even match the recap summary.  They'd talk about Mike Mussina or someone pitching 7 solid innings and the other pitchers did the same holding the other team to 1 run, winning 7-1.  Though they would show a picture of the second baseman.  Why was he chosen?

I think they could have done a lot better, but I really liked the concept.  As for the Topps Now comparison, maybe I would like the Topps Now cards if they were like this set.  Have a recap on the back, the standing of the division rivals, why it meant so much at that moment. I would like that a lot more than what they are doing now, but now I'm just ranting. All in all, if Upper Deck still had a MLB license, this would be a great competitor to Topps Now.

Not bad in concept, but a set's never been more poorly executed. Too many repeat photos of players uninvolved in the most imoprtant plays of the game.

I am doing this set. I love it. The only thing I do not like about it is the postseason series cards. They reveal every game on each card not 1 game 1 card or so. For example Card 1 will have games 1-4 or however many games the series went to. What they should have done was card 1 had game 1 and card 2 had games 1 and 2 and card 3 had games 1 and 2 and 3. So each new card revealed a new game instead of all games on the first card.
