Year: 1993

Set: Magic the Gathering Beta (Rate)

Card: #NNO Wall of Air

“ Trippy. Looks like the "Layla" cover art. ” -ShoTime

“ THAT'S what happened to my salt... ” -royals

“ Interesting artwork, to say the least. I looked up some more of this artist's work, and rather like some of it. ” -switzr1

“ I never got into Magic. I don't get the appeal. This card looks horrid in every possible way. My 4 year old draws pictures better than this . The border being blue, picture blue, and background blue, is awful. The back is just dull and bland. ” -davidhandberry

“ Whenever I hear the Magic guys talking at the Local Card Shop, it seems they are talking a different language. A language which I shall truly never understand. ” -Gunny

“ Huh? ” -IfbBirdsCards

“ Yes, a wall of air. Bad A.. ” -carthage44

“ The strategically placed Chinese Checkers marbles on the back of this card really set it off for me. Niche collectors who focus on cards with the word "salt" on them multiple times will surely love this item. ” -UKboogie

“ what ” -Bargunmaster

“ Every nerd piece of me should have gotten into MTG. Not really sure why I didn't. I have a brother in law now that travels the Midwest in tournaments, and I still haven't gotten into it. Probably the five kids distraction. ” -Brimose

“ I call Shenanigans. Picasso was never commissioned for MTG. He died way before they were even an idea. For shame Wizards of Wonder stealing an oddball Picasso blue period piece for your card game. ” -captkirk42

“ I've se a lot of MTG backs in the Recently Added section but this is the first card front I've paid any attention to. Looks like a Pokémon card. Having 3 kids grow up in the 90's and 00's , I've had the opportunity to see lots of those. ” -cnangle

“ REALLY?! My first crack at this and its a MTG card, my nephew will find this hilarious, me not so much. It is blue .... that's all I got. ” -ranfordfan

“ Van Gogh is attacking with Starry Waves instead of Starry Night. ” -muskie027

This was one of the first sets of MTG.  They have come a long way in the art work.  My sonplays this with his friends at local shops.  He also collects certain artists' work. Not what I am into but I had fun scanning and loading many of the front images of the cards he has.

I started playing this game around 1995 and quit after I had my first son. (Life gets in the way of fun and games) Then when he was old enough to play he got me back into it again. Amazing that a collectible trading card game has survived and thrived for 25 years. You would have done well to invest in cards from this set instead of sports cards at this time. Check the pricing of Beta cards listed on TCG Player, the "Beckett" of trading card pricing. Many of these cards are worth thousands of dollars. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a sports card from 1993 with that kind of value. I'm not sure what kind of Magic community is here on TCDB, but I have thousands of MTG cards that I can scan and upload and trade. It's all a matter of time involved. Getting my sports cards up has been priority 1 and that's still a work in progress.

I never realized that early 90s Orlando Magic regional sets were so New Agey.
Sports Marketing was really different back then.

Randomness is just that... random. I think the idea here is to introduce the membership to things (sports, cards) they may never have been exposed to before. It can't randomly come up all the time.

I got into Magic in 1994 (my first set was Revised). As far as investments go, would have been worth buying the big cards at the time, like any of the Mox cards which were $70-$80 and now go for well north of $1k.

I still collect artifact cards and have cards to trade. Hoping to see more MTG players and collectors come across the site!

I got in for 4th edition but ended up going back to pick up the power 9. Three of my Moxes are Beta along with the Ancestral. The rest are Unlimited. It's insane what they're worth now. My Lotus is pretty beat, but it came in a trade for what were big standard cards at the time. I think I ended up with the best of that deal. Still have an extra Unlimited Mox Pearl and Ruby and Unlimited Ancestral.
