Hey Everyone -

Figured I'd stop creeping around and actually make a post. I recently found the site, from another page, through Twitter... you know how deep that rabbit hole can get. I really love the idea of having a database to catalog my cards. I've been in and out of collecting over the past 25 years. Recently I decided to start sorting my cards... again. Prior to finding the site my plan was sets go in binders, players I collect go in sleeves and small boxes, with everything else going into sleeves and large boxes. I sorted, sleeved, and logged my first series and thought I must be out of my mind to put 6 duplicates all in sleeves. It also seemed really goofy to enter all of my duplicates in the database. So, I popped into the board to see what everyone else has been doing. The first thing I realized is that my collection is tiny compared to what I'm seeing. Looks like there has been a lot of trial and error as well. 

One of the features of the site I really like is being able to flip through my collection online. The part I didn't like was having to scroll through the 6 duplicates. I saw some posts about storing duplicates, but I'm wondering how other members handling entering duplicates into the database. I know it sounds dumb, but it took a lot of extra time to add the additional quantities. I really have no intention of trading so I don't really need to track the duplicates. I also don't intend to store them separately. I really have nothing of significant value, I just love baseball. My goals are to catalog the cards I have and then keep collecting my favorite players. 

Any input is appreciated, whether it's sorting, storage, or cataloging tips. I'm really looking forward to being part of the community.

One tip as I am presently entering a lot of 1981 topps baseball is use the drop down to add multiples of a card. It speeds things up a lot.

I don't really have any advice for your questions, but I will just say welcome! Anyone who shows up with a Simpsons avitar in their first post is a winner in my book.

Welcome to the site!  I agree with Billy, the Simpsons avatar is cool.

Personally, I don’t add my duplicates to my collection.  I don’t have a ton of them really, but I keep them physically separate from my normal collection.  They are stacked in a shoebox.  I am keeping them to give to my son when he is older to jumpstart his collection if he ends up liking cards.

If I have a duplicate of an insert or a cool rookie, I give it to my brother.  Otherwise I will look to trade it with someone here. I will trade commons sometimes if I have something someone might want. I’m not a big trader, as for better or worst I am not very trusting.  Other than one other person, I have only traded with Billy.  But I’m sure most here can be trusted, at least the regulars for sure.  My brother just moved to CT though, so not going to be as easy giving him cards anymore. 

Before I found this site, I donated a bunch of common duplicates to Goodwill. 

Keep in mind, this is just what I do.  It seems like you like to keep your duplicates.  I like the clean look of just having one of each card,  and I don’t have much space to keep my collection a it is.  

You could us the multiple collection feature and use one for your duplicates if you wanted to and another for main collection 

First off, Welcome to the site!  I joined the site a little over a year ago.  How you treat your doubles may depend on how you collect and how plan to use this site.  Personally, I am a set collector. All of my sets go in binders ... eventually.  As for my doubles, I keep them in boxes, list them in the site (so I have an inventory of ALL of my cards), and to encourage trading.  I have executed about 10 trades so far and am always looking to do more.  At some point. I will start selling my doubles, starting with the sets I have completed. 

Yes welcome and enjoy .... this place is massive. My advice is do what you want. Sounds like dupes are not important to you and you feel no nned to add them. That works for me. =) My OCD wants to know my collection to the card and if it takes two years so be it. I ahve added all my Bill Ranford Collection, then my Oiler RC collection, now I am working on my set collection, all along the way I am adding my dupes to trade in the future. But hands down is do what you feel you want to do and nothing more. If you hang around the boards you will leaqrn alot ..... and some things are completely useless such as Canadian Mountain Goats can disappear into thin air!! =D
