Hey people!! When
adding checklists I
see that sometimes
names are spelled
differently due to
nationality and
they appear black
because of this.
They are in the
database but not as
spelled. What is
the correct manner
in which I add
them, do I change
the spelling on the
checklist or do I
link that spelling
to the one in the
data base. I know
if it is an obvious
error in the
checklist itself to
correct it but some
European players
use their proper
names on
international
cards. Ex. Frank
Musil (North
American way)
Frantisek Musil
(proper name). So I
see that some of
his cards
eventhough they
have his proper
name on it still
are in the database
as Frank, so what
is the proper
protocol for this
so that I know for
future additions.

I'm not sure there is an accepted protocol on this. Typing them as they are listed in the DB is obviously easier because they link automatically. I try to do that myself when adding checklists. If I am making corrections, I tend to leave the name and change the PID. In many cases, the name in the DB seems to be the name used on the first card that was entered. In Your example, Musil, the Frantisek cards probably outnumber the Frank cards 10-1, but Frank is the name in the DB. If we had a way that the DB recognized alternate names of the same person, it would clear this up. It's an issue with baseball cards too. A guy might have been Michael on his first card, then Mike on every card after that for the rest of his career. But Michael is how he is in the database. I can't even imagine what DaClyde deals with on the Japanese baseball cards!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I did a quick count
and with 78 cards
total for him of
the ones with scans
Frantisek is about
20 to 1 ..... I
agree with the
alternate names
idea, I think that
is what the linking
players option is
for, at least that
way it shows up in
their list when you
do a player search.
I did it for a Jim
Campbell card in
the same checklist,
the checklist had
him as James so I
didn't alter the
checklist (assuming
it is the same as
what the actual
card has printed)
and just added the
link, did a search
for Jim Campbell
and now the James
Campbell one is on
his list. I would
love to have Admin
clarify if that was
right as if we all
do it differently,
then it makes more
difficult for them.

Right. I just wish that the process you described would link all the cards of James Campbell, instead of just the one you were working with. I think this aspect of the site frustrates me the most because it closely resembles my real job. So maybe I complain too much about it.

I spell the name the way it is spelled on the front of the card. Then I'll link it to the PID in the database. REASON: If someone has a card and wants to search for it or the player in the database, they are going to spell it the way they see it on the card. EXAMPLE: if I have Clarence Coleman's rookie card and want to search for more of his cards, I might not know to search using his nickname, "Choo Choo Coleman".

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that if he is in the database as Choo Choo, a search for Clarence would yield no results.

No, you will get a result. Clarence Coleman is in the database as a name only; it's an empty file. So, you'll think Clarence Coleman has no cards in the database.
This is an issue that many have brought up...players with aliases, nicknames, AKAs, etc. need to link (redirect) to one file.

The 1963 Topps card has "Choo Choo" on front and back, no "Clarence". In 1963 DB listing it actually had "Choo Coleman" for his name. I just changed it to "Choo Choo" if that is okay. btw, what is a PID? Player ID # or what and where does it originate?

Yes, the PID is the player ID. Each name added to the database gets a unique PID when added.

I did the Choo Choo
name to see what
you mean, Clarence
has a PID but it
has never had a
card added to it so
it comes up empty,
Choo Choo has them
all. When looking
at his RC his name
is Clarence but
nowhere could I
find how it was
linked to Choo
Choo. Am I missing
something because
to me that makes no
sense.
