Hey there peeps!! A
question I have had
rattling in my head
for some time now,
when adding new
items to the DB
such as checklists
what do you do as
the "right" thing
regarding names. I
added a checklist
that stated his
name as Danny
Markov and when it
came up there was
no name by that
player, of course I
did a search and
found that he was
entered as Daniil
Markov. So I added
this new alias to
his info and all
should be good.
That is the proper
procedure correct?
I hope so! What I
am wondering is why
so many cards
display a different
name that what the
card states. Should
these not be fixed
now that the alias
ability has been
added? It always
makes me uncomfy
when I see a card
listed with a
different name that
what the card
states. Might just
be me, not sure.
Sometimes the
amount of cards
with the English
name is more
numerous than the
European spelling.
It is a god send
the alais feature
and I am sure my
mind is just
wandering this
Wednesday night.

My very personal opinion:
I think the name in the set listing should appear exactly as it does on the card. (Would make it easier to find, etc.) If the spelling is not correct, or is a nickname (e.g., Danny Markov instead of Daniil Markov), then it should be linked to the PID of the "commonly-used" name. Of course, I could possibly be the most AR/OCD person on the planet. And I'm cool with that.
For example, in 1982 Donruss, Alan Trammell's name is misspelled on both the regular card and the Diamond King subset card as "Trammel". Personally, I'd like to see the checklist show it as "Alan Trammel", but obviously, if you print out the checklist of all Alan Trammell cards, it should appear there.
I hope I was able to articulate my thoughts clearly.

I totally agree with your opinion. I always use this rule too.
This is a harder, but I think this is the best way to keep the database accurately.

I suspect a lot of the checklists where the name conflicts with what is on the card is due to the source the checklist was pulled from. I'm not going to take a particular stance, I just want to be sure all of a player's cards appear in search results. In practice, I probably do more of what Billy is saying. |

For my example, the
player actually
goes by Danny
Markov. Did not
even know his name
is Daniil until I
saw his very first
bunch of cards, but
he also has cards
that are Danny
Markov, so both
have been used on
the card itself.
Ask 9 out of 10
hockey fans and
they will say he is
Danny Markov not
Daniil. The
Charlton, which I
feel is a highly
respectable
publication lists
him in their index
as Danny not
Daniil. Again that
is why I like the
alais function we
have now. I just
think the checklist
should match the
card that is all,
escpecially in hus
case as it is not
an error or
variation, just a
maater of fact that
he can and has gone
by both.

As long as an alternate name is present in the PID's information as an alias, the cards will automatically link to that PID regardles of which name you use in the checklist. For instance, Alex Guerrero was called Alexander Guerrero on his early cards. Alexander is currently entered as Alex's alias. If I find a set where he is called Alexander, I can use Alexander in the checklist and it will link to the Alex PID automatically. If the alias is entered after the checklist is uploaded, you can just click on the set name under the Name Validation System on the Things To Do list, and it will match it up automatically for you then. So if a guy has cards under two names, as long as the Alias feature is used, the Database will do the work for you
I agree with Billy 100% that a player with a misspelled name should be entered correctly, with a UER notation explaining the misspelling. Clearly there are some that disagree, and that is fine.
Those of you who don't collect wrestling cards; be glad you don't. Then you would have to deal with Mick Foley / Mankind / Cactus Jack / Dude Love all being the same person. Tons of multiple personalities and gimmicks and trademarked names. Even KENTA from Daclyde's Japanese wrestling sets and Hideo Itami from 2015 Topps WWE sets are the same person.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster. |
