How much does it cost to mail a legal sized envelope with one card in a plastic in one sheet of paper (under 1 ounce total) to Canada from the US?    Thanks

According to the USPS web site, a "letter" (standard #10 envelope size) is $1.20. An "Envelope containing a rigid object" is $1.42. Depends on your PO, and if it gets through for the 22 cents less.

  Thanks everyone.     I once took an envelope to be mailed and I was concerned it was over an ounce.  I was mailing 4 cards.  So I asked the clerk to weigh it.   She took the envelope and weighed it and said "there's something inside here".   I replied, "I don't usually mail empty envelopes".             It survived the postal crushing machines.

Like vrooomed said there's a surcharge for "non-machineable" envelopes. If it's too rigid to go through the automated sorting machines. Most of the stuff I mail (top loaders, cardboard) is apparently not too rigid and flexible enough to go through the machines. I've never had anything returned for insufficient postage...yet (fingers crossed).

I put 2 forever stamps on the envelope and have not had anything returned yet.

I don't know the actual rule for international mail, but I do know domestically, it really does't matter what an envelope weighs, so much as it's thickness. Once over 3/8" thick, an envelope basically becomes a parcel, (being non-machanable), and therefore charged a parcel rate. As a postal carrier, I see many bulky envelopes that get ripped apart by the sorting machines, because they weren't designated non-machinable. An envelope with a dozen cards or so, could easily get ripped in the machines.

If it's anything more than one toploader, it's a bubble mailer for stuff leaving this house!

I've thrown a few envelopes into the mail (I always go to get postage when I mail it) and they almost always check the thickness of the envelope both for machining and for if it'd fit in the mail slot.

I just have to say though I've seen so much variation in cost for packages sent to me (I'm Canadian) I've seen $1.20 up to $31.. Being on a fixed income myself I tend to go as inexpensive as possible while still trying to make sure cards don't get damaged. Nobody's complained yet, so... :D

When less than 20 cards, I place them in three short stacks in an extra wide plastic sleeve, enclose the three stacks between 2 cereal box cardboards and put them in a long envelope.  I then put standard postage for a letter to the USA without my return address.  I don't let the postal clerk measure or weigh it (I don't bring it in with me to get stamps).  I drop it in the mailbox and the recipient gets it within a couple of weeks.  No complaints received.
