Hey. My nephew turns 9 in a few weeks and he is getting into collecting cards. I have been giving him my doubles and stuff to start him off. He got interested looking at mine. Does anyone have any advice or help. I have been collecting for so long I am set in my ways. Thanks.

That depends on what kind of advice you are looking for. My nephew will be 9 in July, but I started him out early. I've been giving him duplicate cards for about 5-6 years now, but only for something he shows ANY interest in after looking at my collection of cards.
I'd like to suggest cards as Birthday and Christmas gifts. I've given my nephew several retail boxes as gifts on those days and you should know that nothing beats the thrill of opening your own packs of cards! For Christmas 2015, I gave him his first ever Hobby box of cards. He was thrilled to get it and really excited as he opened each pack. I think that I enjoyed watching him open them as much as he enjoyed actually opening them!
He has leaned more into Pokemon lately, but that's what his friends do too, so I'm not surprised by that. I'm hoping that as he gets older, he'll go back to sports cards. I guess that only time will tell.

I,ve been giving him many of my doubles and some packs of mjunk era stuff which he likes opening. Once i see how he is I will start giving him newer stuff. He is very hard to read though. And like your son he likes Magic , Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh.

Since he is a new collector a plus is teaching him how to store cards, pages or boxes. And no rubber bands! When I first started I did that and couldn't figure out why the card dealer looked horrified lol. Second, if possible learn a little about what your son collects if it's non sports related. With Pokemon, MTG, and Yugioh some cards are high dollar and some kids will know and try to take advantage and trade a high dollar card for a cheap card. Sad but true. If it's sports, just keep doing what you are doing. Junk wax until you think he's ready for better cards, go from there. Hope this helps, good luck and have fun!

If you have Dollar Tree in your area, they usually have dollar packs that might have 3 or 4 cards. Usually stuff like Donruss and Triple Play. That would at least give him some cards of guys he would be able to see on TV. And Triple Play is geared toward kids with stickers and other fun kid stuff in the packs.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I have learned a lot about Magic and stuff since he started getting interested in collecting. Thanks all this will help me lead him in the right direction. His Grandmom will make sure he puts them away right.

I can't believe I forgot to mention anything about storing the cards! Sorry, but I've been drinking since shortly after the NASCAR race started. I always gave the cards to my nephew already placed in a penny sleeve, toploader, and team bag. I also gave him his first card album and pages to put his cards inside. I even made trades for him to get him a few memorabilia cards and I put those in one-touch cases for him.
Now that he lives an hour-drive away from me, I don't see him as much and so his schoolmates help drive his interest. Most of the Pokemon cards he gets are new ones (2014 & 2015), so there's not much value there. He got a pack for Easter and I looked up the values shortly after he opened the pack and nothing had a BV of more than $1.

Definitely check them out! The 1999's tend to have a LOT of value to specific cards. The other high-BV cards are kind of scattered by years. The holofoil cards are where it gets a bit confusing. You have to know what is holofoil vs. reverse-holofoil. :)
