Hi, I was wondering what people's thoughts are on the pricing function on the site. I noticed a lot of cards on here don't have prices, or some of the prices seem off. I also have noticed that a lot of collectors here don't even have the prices shown on their collections.
I'm starting to think in may be best just to turn off the prices on my collection. Any thoughts?

My opinnion only but I think it was a good idea though difficult to administer. When I first started on this site, I tried to enter prices of individual cards that I bought or saw sold at auction. But I soon ran into some ridiculous entries which skewered the results. I also found it impossible to enter individual card prices when I bought a bunch of cards (tens to a thousand plus) as who is to say what an individual card is worth in a large purchase.
I also find the results that the site puts out is of no help when looking at a set. For example, the 1990 Donruss set, ugly as it is, comes up with a value of $126 because I have all of the cards. I do not know of a way to enter a value for a complete set. You can buy the 1990 Donruss set for less than $10.
So, in short, I think this feature needs to be discontinued and / or revamped.

Im with sandyrusty on this one......My opinion, the pricing of cards here has no value. The price of even " premium" cards goes up and down way too much, and who takes the time to update the prices ???????
For me, I don't like the feature, so I just ignore it.

The one place I started to input prices was on Magic cards because the source for getting prices online are fairly easy to get to. The problem I came across (and why I hadn't finished) was due to the nature of the prices fluctuating constantly and being a manual update.
For those on this site, I think collecting is more the point and although it is always nice to have some concept of collection value, the only time you would care is when you were going t sell, at which point you would look to current sources away from the website anyway.
I think the point is right on regarding the 1990 Donruss baseball - you may buy any single card for 5 or 10 cents, especially if it was the last card to complete the set, but that doesn't make each card worth enough for the set to be valued over $100.
My "two cents" would be to either get a pricing system that provided value (that some stock could be put in) or remove it completely. I would suggest that pricing be part of a higher level permission, but I'm not sure many people with those higher level permissions would bother with pricing when there are so many other areas on the site they can add value to.

The short answer...get rid of it.
I used it to put prices on some of my For Sale/Trade cards. But a while back all those prices changed to the card's Median Price (must have been some database programming glitch). Not wanting to go back and reenter all my prices, I just stopped using the Price feature.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

One of my favorite features that Admin has added since I joined was the ability to turn that feature off. I did, and have no intention of ever turning it back on...in fact, if the feature to disable it was ever removed, my participation would likely be removed as well.
I personally don't feel it should be here at all. The name of the site is Trading Card Database, not Trading Card Price Guide. I know nobody cares what I think but in my opinion it would give our site more credibility if it was not here.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. Yeah I tend to agree with all you guys, which is why I will most likely be turning the feature off on my collection.
Thanks for the input!

Admin, did you hear? Best point is that this is a "Trading Card Database" not a price guide.

I don't rely on it but I like it. I do a lot of things on my phone so a price guide isn't always around when I need it. I like to purchase oddball items now and then and like having a rough idea of what I should be spending on them.

I agree with this. Obviously so many of the prices are way out of line, but I have found some useful on occasion. I never knew there was an option to turn off the pricing.
