First...avid collector...second...best site on the lanet, I tell all my collecting friends...But...might I suggest we do not seperate the teams...The Los Angeles Rams and St. Louis Rams should be together...Same goes for the Colts, Raiders, etc...It makes it very difficult to bounce back and forth between current teams and former teams...Just my .02...

Hmmm. I see your point, but your way causes other difficulties. The Washington Senators, in particular, come to mind. So...they should be bunched with... the Minnesota Twins? Or the Texas Rangers? Or both? Technically, the 1958 Washington Senators were a different team than the 1962 Washington Senators. Maybe they're the exception that can be ignored. I dunno...
So, I don't have a solution, but I'm not sure I like yours. Maybe link between the "two" teams, so it's easy to bounce back and forth, but they're not all lumped together?
Just my .01.

Not sure about a solution, but Bob's point is a good one, especially his example of the Rams. Does it make sense that the current Los Angeles Rams are lumped together with the original Los Angeles Rams, but the St. Louis Rams are separate?
Of course, for v3's examples and lots of others -- I'm thinking of hockey in particular -- one may not know that an older team moved and became a current team. It's easy with teams like the Rams or Colts where the nickname remained. If you searched for Hartford Whalers cards, would you know to look under the Carolina Hurricanes?

understand the point, but i'm think its good to keep separte to maintain where that franchise went.. i look at players who played for Oakland Raiders and LA along with the same examples above.. its shows the flow of the team itself and the players involved. Yeh, on some CL you may "Team A / Team B" -- i think of a couple cards Bo Jackson and Allen has where they are listed on both ..

I could get behind some kind of linking, but what it comes down to is the team listed on the card should be . This is a trading card database not a general sports database. We're here to identify and describe the cards. If the card says St. Louis Rams then that's what needs to be attached to the card in the TCDB. If somebody wants to see Dallas Texans cards, they probably aren't really interested in seeing current Kansas City Chiefs cards as well.

Turning off trading because my collection is in complete disarray after moving and I don't know when I can get it organized.

I cannot see lumping the Philadelphia Warriors with the Golden State Warriors. Nor can I see lumping the Chicago Cardinals with the Arizona Cardinals. Nor the Boston Braves with the Atlanta Braves. The list is not endless but it sure is a long one.

From a collector's POV there are collectors who collect their local team. When the team moves they no longer collect the new team and wouldn't want the new team showing up on their team's checklist. For me there are specific teams I collect and don't want the new/moved teams. I collect the Seattle Pilots not the Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Barons not the Minnesota North Stars, Kansas City Scouts not the Colorado Rockies or New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Browns not the Baltimore Orioles.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I wouldn't lump them together. I do, however, hate a simple adjustment in the team name (same franchise), such as Anaheim Mighty Ducks to Anaheim Ducks. I realize there's a technical reason for that, but it's the same city/team/franchise.

Continuing to obsess about my Washington Senators example, and people have pointed out other teams that have similar issues, maybe the teams with more than one life under that name could be identified by the years the team was in existence? All different franchises.
Washington Senators (1891-1899)
Washington Senators (1901-1960)
Washington Senators (1961-1971)
(But for the Los Angeles/Saint Louis Rams, the same franchise keeps going back and forth....)
Whew. That might not be worth the effort and actually has the effect of creating MORE teams and splitting them up further. But, having lived in DC for 25 years, I have some interest in the Senators and the Nationals. I don't care much about the Rangers, Twins, or Expos.
This one's a real poser....

I can see where confussion can set in for sure...I do like the idea of a link, or an exception to certain teams...L.A. / St, louis comes to mind obviously, the St. Louis / Phoenix / Arizona Cardinals are also another team, as are the Colts of Indianapolis by way of Baltimore..A few other teams that can be left alone...Seattle Pilots whom moved to Milwaukee, and certainly the New Orleans/Utah Jazz...and hockey would be a fun trip through the team C/L for sure...Just wanted to pose the question because I found myself bouncing back and forth this morning and felt like a Genesis song, Land of Confusion...a do like the idea of a direct link to the teams though...There isn't any difference between Oakland and Los Angeles as far as teams go, so they could probably be in the Rams, Cardinals basket...I didn't really expect to much response, so this was a welcome surprise...Thank you fellow collectors...
