Was it something you were chasing for a while?   A popular athlete, and therefore in high demand?,  A 1 of 1?

$120 for Charles Barkley's Fleer rookie card, which I purchased at the height of his popularity during his 92-93 MVP season with Phoenix. It was the second-last card I needed to complete the 86-87 Fleer basketball set. I still don't have the Jordan.

The same card would probably only cost about 50 bucks today.

Too funny CAD!! The most I ever spent on a card was my Gretzky Topps RC, $360 beans at an auction, probably overpaid but was not going to walk away without it. Next to that the wife spent a $110 on a Ranford for me.

I've spent a couple hundred each on a graded Montana RC and a Payton RC.    But I've spent tons on $30-50 cards.

Hmmm. Probably the $100 I laid out for my Hassan triple folder. After finally breaking out of my Topps only approach, I had added a few tobacco cards to my collection and learned of the triple folders. Thought they were cool. Then I found one with Johnny Evers in an action shot in the middle with two other Cubs on the sides. Like CAD, I researched the players and loved what I found. James Archer -- arm muscles shortened when he fell into a vat of hot sap...so he wound up with a cannon of an arm for a catcher. Awesome. Ed Reulback, who is the only player to throw two shutouts in one day and should be in the Hall of Fame. Awesome. PSA 4? That's my highest graded card. I love it. I had stalked that card for a couple of months.

As a teenager, paying, I think $60 to get a Lou Brock rookie was my biggest expense. Still love that card.

The $75 I spent on my 1956 Jackie Robinson, a card I stalked on-line for months, was memorable.

The most I ever spent at once on cards was $400 for the 1951 Topps Redbacks complete set at a live auction. I still can't really believe I have those cards, as well.

I was browsing through CAD's collection the other day, and saw that he has the Old Judge Card. And I decided I kinda need one. That, or an original Gypsy Queen, since I now collect the new Gypsy Queens. So at some point, I'll decide to go for it and break my single card spending record. I'm just not sure when....

Oh, and after I finish my 1970 and 71 sets, I'll be working on 1968 and 1969, so the Ryan rookie is in there. That should break a record, as well. But that could be several years off.

I cannot remember now which card(s) it was that tops them all, but I know we hit 3 digits on a couple Yzerman issues (mostly factory-issued autographs, and one SN out of like 8 or 9). I think we hit 3 digits on the Martin Lapointe UD 1/1 (pack 1/1, not a show promo 1/1), but that was something we just had to have.

The most I paid in any one transaction was actually fairly recent. I hit 4 digits. it was for the 1973-1977 Topps sets (and a partial 1972 set). It was my wife's uncle that I bought them from. They need a few replacements, but overall, great sets. And it was family. I may have been able to do better on the price, but it wouldn't be worth it. At least these stay in the family now. It was worth the extra for that.

$300 on a 1969 Topps Reggie Jackson RC; $300 on a 1961-62 Gordie Howe card; $250 on a 1968 OPC Nolan Ryan RC.  Have dropped similar amounts on collections of older cards.

Not only has sandyrusty spent more on individual cards than I have, he's now about to pass me on total number of forum posts, which would kick me down to 11th and I'd lose the bonus my contract calls for if I stay in the top ten....

I guess I have the comfort of knowing that I got a decent 1969 Reggie Jackson in a $20 box I bought from a kid up the street when I was about 12.

i think i prob hit close to 400 on an Aaron Rodgers RC .. and pretty sure i came close to that on a couple Eli Manning cards.. why ? i don't know- seem like a good idea at the time. but still trying to get a hold of a Pete Rose RC without having to donate an arm or leg with it :-(   other than that, still need a Peyton Man. and a Tom Brady auto RC which are ridonkulously outrageous.
