Hi,
I'm sure that this could happen with any set, more so with HC sets. However, my reason for writing this post regards Reprint Sets, although too late for me, a warning to the rest of you. I finally got around to enter my reprint sets in the DB. Much to my surprise I found at least 3 sets missing cards, so I thought I had complete sets, but now have sets missing a card or so. So pissed off!, they were bought years ago.
PLEASE Check ALL HC sets for the complete and correct cards.
~BOB~

I've been bitten by this many times myself Bob. I've also bought factory sets that were still factory sealed and were missing cards on more than one occasion. I can think of 5 times for the former and 3 for the latter! I won't spend more than $5 for a hand collated set, because I know it's not really trustworthy, if I can help it.

That may explain why I was missing both Marino cards from my hand-collated 1989 Topps set I bought back then. I've since traded for them.

I've also had it happen where parallel cards were put in the set in place of base cards when purchasing a hand collated set.

There should be a repercussion. I am not sure where the purchases were made, but if it was eBay, they should do something about it. It is false advertising. The seller should make the buyer whole by getting the missing cards or refunding the money and having the cards sent back. I know this probably will never happen, but how frustrating that you cannot trust a seller.

I bought a 2010 Topps baseball factory sealed set. It was missing the Delmon Young card. (Bought one.) Even factory sets aren't perfect.
I received in a trade about 20 years ago a ton of hockey sets (mixed HC & FS) and thousands of loose cards. More recently (about 3 years ago), I sold many of the sets in groups. One of the HC sets was one of the early Upper Deck sets. I did not double check the set. The buyer contacted me that it was missing a few cards. Although I had extras in a commons box (and they were only commons) and could not find all the missing cards, only a couple. I was able to work out a deal where I sent him some other stuff in addition to the ones I did have.
If you offer a HC set, it pays to check it for completeness. I too have learned the hard way.

I've bought 4-5 hand-collated sets. I always check them immediately. A couple times they've been short a few cards. Once the guy just sent me the cards, once I gotta a partial refund and bought the card separately. And when they've included extras, I just kept them. Now i contact the seller and plead with them to double check before sending. My last three have been fine. It's a risk you take and it's a little on the buyer if he doesn't check what he's bought right away.

Here are my horror stories:
- 1996-96 Topps Factory set. Purchased in 1997. Missing card #111, which I later found out was done on purpose.
- 1992 Langenberg ARCA Flash. Purchased in 2009. Missing two cards but had two copies of two others. Missing cards rank #1 and #2 on my wantlist.
- 1991 Thunder on the Water. Like the other two, factory sealed, but missing one card with a duplicate of another. Purchased on Ebay.
- 1996 Pinnacle Foil (NASCAR). All numbers were there but the person who hand-collated it put in the Winston Cup parallel instead of the base card. Purchased at a card show sometime in the 1990s.
- 1996 Collect-A-Card Corvette Heritage Collection. Purchased at a card show, missing the final three cards of the set. Still have not found them.
- 1996-97 Topps Chrome. Spent a large chunk of money to purchase a complete set, but the seller kept most of the rookie cards. The only time I left negative feedback on a card forum in roughly 16 years of membership.
- 1995 The Best of Royo. Included a parallel instead of a base card. This set was a gift though so I can't complain.
- I can't remember the others right now, but I know the Pinnacle Foil set is not the only one where I've gotten a parallel instead of a base card.

This has been happening to collectors for ever since the hobby began. When I buy a HC set, I always check to make sure the key cards are included. One time in the 90s, I was looking to buy a 1989 Fleer set. Though it was a factory set, the seal had been broken. Sure enough, the Griffey RC was missing. Felt bad for the store owner but someone had pilfered it. If I recall, I still boughtthe set reduced by the value of the missing card. The star cards are easy to find and complete the set.
Many times I have received "complete sets" only to find that the most obscure 1 or 2 cards are missing. These are much more difficult to find (till this trading site came along). Many times, I do have extras in my own For Trade boxes, but I do have quite a few sets that are missing only a couple of cards because they are commons that no dealer cares tosort through for.
When I complete a set, I always go through the whole set one last time to make sure that all of the cards are there. And yes, I have found myself thinking the set is complete only to find a missing #. We all make mistakes.

I bought a hand collated set on ebay that was missing one card. I told the seller about it and he refunded all my money and let me keep the cards.
