I have a question for everyone here, especially those who sell and even buy via ebay. I'm posting it in the general forum so that it doesn't swallow up anyone's buy/sell/trade posts in that forum.

I came across this listing on eBay today  (link at bottom). If you go to the sellers profile you can see other similarly priced cards. My question is: do you think this is a user who truly doesn't know the value, didn't do the research, and honestly believes that the cards are worth this much? Or is this probably a seller who is fully aware of what they're doing and hoping to prey upon an inexperienced buyer and make a quick chunk of change?  

I'm just curious; it's something I've often wondered about, and after the debacle of a listing we were shown yesterday it seems ever more relevant.

Probably out to make a quick buck.   But it also states "no reasonable offer refused".   He is probably hoping someone offers him $5 which is still too high for that card.

Well looking at his recent selling history.  I would say cards aren't his or her thing, but I'd have to say who in their right mind would thing 91 Upper Deck is that valuable?

I noticed the recent sales as well. I guess that if I were to post an item for sale I would do as much research as possible before setting a price. But on the other hand, the idea of setting a high price and taking a reasonable offer makes sense too. 

Taking offers is one thing. Setting a starting price that's just stupid is another. $20 for a team set from 1991 UD is stupid. I'm pretty sure you could buy an entire set for $20. Hopefully, no unknowning grandma or grandpa who knows their grandkid likes baseball cards falls for this.

I don't like this tactic. Eventhough they are willing to take best offer, the initial high price has the potential to mislead people that don't know the hobby into thinking that this is a valuable card. I have to assume that this is the intent. I understand "buyer beware", but I think this tactic is underhanded. 

I think this guy is completely clueless, and just doesn't know what he's doing at all. 

Any eBay seller like this, I completely avoid.  Whether it's total ignorance on their part, or they knowingly do this is irrelevant to me. 

I've heard it said that any time you sell something at a buy-it-now price and it sells you may have listed it for too little since if someone is willing to pay that, they may have been willing to pay more. Absolutely not reasonable on these prices though. Anybody that knows about cards would probably ignore this seller entirely.

I agree with what others have said that this is an underhanded approach by the seller to cheat an unsuspecting buyer. The listing for three "RARE" 1990 Topps Nolan Ryan 5000K cards is an example. I wish they were worth near $79.99. I am too skeptical to believe they are an honest mistake. It is tempting to report them just for referring to the cards as a great investment. Clearly that is not accurate.

I'm tempted to offer him 5 cents on every listing.
