I recently decided that it was time to expand my storage options and replace some of my older storage boxes. I chose to go with BCW's Card House w/ 12x 800 count, 2-piece storage boxes. I ordered 4 of them; increasing my storage capacity by nearly 40,000 cards.
Well, they arrived in the mail last night. For me, it was almost like Christmas morning. My wife and daughter were not nearly as excited. They thought it funny that I received a huge cardboard box that was full of cardboard boxes in which I was going to place smaller cardboard boxes that were full of little pieces of cardboard.
Sometimes I think they just don't understand me.

I often question my sanity when it comes to collecting little pieces of cardboard. That's okay, we all understand each other here.

I can relate. The wife does not get excited for my storage boxes either. When I purchased one of the card houses she just rolled her eyes. Still have'nt figured out what i am going to use it for.

A few years ago I started using shoe holders to store some of my boxes. Same concept as the house but I'm not sure what I paideia for them, the houses look to be around $16. I store smaller than 800 count boxes in them and they still stick out some. I can fit 2 boxes in each slot. This may be another option for your storage if you can find them cheap somewhere.

The shoe holder is a good idea. I'm a set builder, so I generally like the 800 count box (1 box for each set). I'm now up to 8 card houses (76,800 cards worth of storage). I still use bigger boxes for doubles of mostly junk wax sets (I have a 5,200 count box overflowing with '87 Topps) I also keep doubles or some of the smaller sets in 500 count boxes. I actually have an old shoe holder in my storage room. I might pull it out and give it a go. I like the card houses for sets because I can sort by year and brand easily. It makes digging out cards for trades easy. Plus, I like the look of the card houses. I paid $80 (including shipping) for 4 houses and 50x 800 count boxes. I bought directly from BCW because Amazon prices are nearly double.

I've been needing boxes, but refuse to purchase any - if my wife knew that fact she'd probably die as she thinks I spend too much on card collecting as is - however, today at work I confiscated three sturdy boxes, they're made very similar to what we normally use to store cards in and probably hold about 2000 cards, maybe more, and didn't have to pay a dime!

When you guys use boxes like 800 counts, do you find it cumbersome to arrange cards? I like to have all my cards in order by set and year, so if I get an older card, I have to shift all my current cards down to put them in the correct spot. I use 3200 count boxes, and I would think using this method with many smaller boxes would be kind of a pain?

My dad made me some shelves a few years ago that are a six foot tall version of the shoe holders. Each slot holds 3 5000 count boxes and has enough room to hold unopened boxes of cards that relate to those 5000 count boxes. If the 5000 cont box fills up I start partial sets and put them in the 800 count or smaller boxes. The key to finding cards is good labeling and having a good spreadsheet letting you know how many partials you have. At least this works good for me. I also have bookcases full of binders and the spreadsheet lets me know which sets are in binders.
