So my best friend's name is Frank Sullivan. When I learned that that's the name of a baseball player in the fifties and sixties, I decided I needed all his Topps cards. A modest, fairly easy goal accomplished today. I now have all nine cards from 1955 to 1963. My friend feels "loved, oddly loved."
Anyone collect things for an equally random, stupid reason?

I think that's
pretty cool,
actually. Believe
me, the first thing
I did when I
discovered the
Database (Well, not
the first thing,
but the first day)
I went through the
player listings for
the other sports I
don't collect to
see if there were
any Kingsleys
listed. (There
weren't)
My goal is still to
have every NBA,
NASCAR, Automotive,
Star Wars and other
cards ever
produced, for what
it's worth. Yeah, I
know it can't
happen, but I can
dream.

Sometimes, it's the
impossibility of a
goal that keeps
makes it fun and
worth while. I know
I will never get all
near 4,000 Selanne
cards, but now that
he's retired it
seems slightly more
possible!

I have two goals
right now.. Collect
as many Toronto
Blue Jays cards as
I can and Charlie
Simmer, since he is
from my hometown.

Now that they show up regularly in sets like Goodwin Champions and Panini Americana, I want a card of every US President. Shouldn't be hard to do. I just set this goal yesterday and this is the first time I've told anyone.. Maybe I will even do a list on the db. I've never done one yet.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster. |

If I may make a
suggestion, the
2004 Upper Deck
History of the
United States has
very nice cards for
all the presidents
up to that point.
It's also available
in factory set
form, which is how
I got mine, but no
insert chance that
way. Another
interesting way to
go about it would
be to have each
President
represented from a
different set. It
should be possible,
although some of
the forgotten do-
nothings from the
1800s might be a
challenge. You'd
have to delve into
the world of
vintage Tobacco
cards to do that. I
have a spare George
Bush (Sr.) from
Topps Desert Storm
if you want it.

I have plans of collecting a set of cards from all the sports stars who has appeared on The Simpsons for a friend. He collects cards basically because of me, and we are both huge fans of The Simpsons.
After watching Burn Notive, I also have had an urge to collect Chuck Finley cards, which I remembered when he played baseball, and remembered it again after Sam used it as an alias.

My favorite hockey blogger is Sean McIndoe from Down Goes Brown and Grantland. Every Friday he does an NHL Grab Bag- sort of a week in review in the world of hockey. He includes sections like "What is the Hockey World Pretending to be Outraged About Now," "Awesome and/or Horrific Old YouTube Clip of the Week," and "What has Don Cherry Gone and Done Now?" My favorite section is the "Obscure Former Player of the Week" section. I did a complete history and analysis of it for him here:

I ultimately want to own a card of every obscure former player. The guys from the '40s will definitely be tough, though.

Welcome to the
Database!
Collecting obscure
players is fun. I
would rather get an
obscure player than
another of a
superstar myself. I
have collected over
2300 different NBA
players, and one of
my goals is to get
every player who
had a card issued
into my collection.
There are quite a
few who never got
cards, even into
the 1990s and
2000s, let alone
the early years.
