I wish I had your problems! On suicide watch with 50,000 cards.

I've quit entering my collection, and am having more fun with my cards than I've had in years.  I even find myself checking the forums more frequently again in recent weeks, though I don't usually say anything.  I just needed a break to reorganize. It had gone from hobby to chore, and I had reached the point where I just wanted to throw them all out. Not any more. I know I don't fit the stereotype of a typical collector, who needs to know exactly what he has, and pursues completing sets or whatnot.

Switzr, the one thing I think everyone knows is your unconventional and a HOTHEAD!! =D

I have been there when I almost avoided my collection because of the overwhelming task of reorganizing.  I took a break from doing some of the most time-consuming chores and enjoyed the colelction for what it was - a hobby.  But every so often I would get back at the re-organizing and am now almost where I am happy with it all. In fact, the things I do now are for improving my ability to enjoy the cards even more, such as putting more cards into binders where I can easily look at them (my preference).

I applaud you for stepping back to find the "hobby" again instead of the "work" in progress.

Sounds like a pretty common problem for a lot of us whether it's 5000 or 500,000 cards. I don't know what the "best" way to do it is, but what I am going to try and do is keep them all sorted by make, year, and sets first. Complete sets won't be messed with except for as a set and any small partial sets would be available for trading or selling or whatever. My player collections will be separated from those after the base card for that set was included in the set. So basically a set collection, followed by player collection, and then trade or sell collection.

Now if anyone would like to come do this for me....

That is exactly how my colection(s) are.  Took time to get there but well worth the effort.
