I have always tried to get the base set, and to me if the base set has X number of cards that is how many I try to find. 

As far as insert cards go, besides the Mantle home run set topps did 10years ago, I have a book I call "baseball random" they all go in.

LOL .............. I should correct myself, my SN5 and 1 of 1 are both cards bought by my wife as well Suomi !! I just said me to simplify ..... both times I said they were too much, the SN5 card was Best Offer and she got him down to 100 and the 1 of 1 she bought because she was tired of hearing me whine about how the "famous" (in my circles) ranfordfan30 has all the 1 of 1s out there!!

This started for me in 1991 or 1992 with the Topp's Gold. First it was the redemption Winners followed by the Gold Insert in each box. Watched at many card shows, people just zipping through packs looking for the "Gold Rush" I was able to complete sets by purchasing the "YAWN" regular set cards.
