My upstairs neighbor's 3 year old was given an unopened box of 2008-09 artifacts yesterday and it spurred on an idea. I can get rid of my doubles!!!! Thoughts on whether this is a good idea or maybe 3, (almost 4,) years old is just a little too soon....

For artifacts, I think it may be a little soon; that's a somewhat high-end set. But for doubles of stuff that isn't of the highest quality, go for it!

I agree with Howintensive the GUs/Autos/Artifact stuff is a bit much for a 3-4 year old (even up to 5maybe6).
Then again I was somewhere under 5 when I first started "collecting" so young in fact that I don't recall what age I was. I have 2 older brothers and one of them was still into card collecting so that was a factor.

I started because my friends were collecting and i wanted to trade cards too. Out of that small group I believe I'm the only one who knows where his collection is let alone still collect

I started collecting at the age of 6 but didnt start taking care of my card and keeping them nice until around 10. Back then I used them to make up custom teams and wrapped them in the dreaded rubber bands. About age 10 was when I started using binders and plastic sheets.
He can definitely learn to collect at his age but more than likely they wont stay in good condition at first.

That's one lucky kid! Artifacts isn't what I would give a toddler. But you never know what the kid will get!

Go through everything. Put whatever you don't have or want to the side. Replace them with your doubles. He's 3 years old. He won't notice.

A yes the dread rubber bands. I did that as a kid also. Until the late 70s at around 10 or 11. I had 1970-1972 football cards in rubber bands in a "junk" drawer of the desk I had in my bedroom as a kid. Sometime in the 70s the rubberband that had been around them dried up and broke. I remember finding chunks of rubber band on a couple and wondering what the heck it was. It wasn't till years later that I realized what that "gunk" had been. I might still have some of those cards.
