As I pulled the cards for a trade with a fellow member, I noticed that even though he asked for his favorite team player cards, he also asked for cards of some of the stars who had been traded or signed with other teams after having been with his team. This made me wonder how many collectors continue to collect palyers they enjoyed watching when playing for their team and then were subsequently traded or left as free agents. For this forum, I am not talking about HOF, just stars. For me it's players for the Toronto Blue Jays like Joe Carter (mostly pre-Blue Jays) and Jimmy Key (post- Blue Jays). And yes, I for one do collect these players' cards even in other teams' uniforms.

I think one thing I would need to consider is the time period. For example, I'm a Reds fan, but the only Reds player in my personal collection is Joey Votto. Because of this, if he were traded or signed somewhere else, I probably would stop actively collecting new cards of him. Now, I would never turn any of them away and he would still be one of my favorite players, but when I consider the sheer volume of cards produced for him already, it would be easier to focus on just Reds cards.
On the flip side, the two players you mentioned would be easier to collect other teams of (okay, not easier; perhaps more attainable? I think you know what I mean) just because of the time period. So that would probably be my determining factor.

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

I have done this on some of my projects as well but not all
I have a notebook of 2006 Topps Cardinals championship team.
For each of the players I sought out all topps base including before 06 and after they left the team.
looks pretty cool in a binder with a page by player.
Only 3 still playing I think...Molina, Wainwright, and Pujols.
I do need a 2017 topps pujols if anyone can trade me one
thanks, mark

Back in the days when I was first collecting beyond complete sets, it was a much simpler time. When I started my Phillies collection, there were a couple of players who had come over in trades or as a free agent (Pete Rose). I also was more concerned about moving forward, rather than completing the previous years. I do remember getting a big collection of 1974 Topps cards, and adding the 1974 Garry Maddox to my want list even though he was clearly with the Giants still at that point. Later on, when I was given about 100 different Phillies from the 1960-1969 period, and finally figured out what I had and what I was missing (my intro to the TCDB), was when I abandoned the idea of getting common players pre- and/or post-Phillies. (Too many players have come through the organization, and where do you draw the line?) I have made a couple of exceptions, but only because I had the cards already. And stars/HOFers (Carlton, Rose, Perez, Morgan, Hamels, Halladay, Utley) get collected as "stars" anyway (except for their time with the Phillies, then the cards go with the Phillies cards). But, guys like Manny Trillo, Bo Diaz, and Jeremy Hellickson will only find their way into the binder(s) when listed and/or dressed in a Phillies uniform.
That said, if my card collection was to have ended in 1990 (or if the companies continued to issue product like they did before that point), I might be tempted to do that. But again, since I'm a set collector as well, I have all these cards anyway (just in a different location). I just like the idea of having 2 of each of the Phillies cards.
Recently, I added another team to the collection - the local minor league team. They started in 1994, so it gave me a nice starting point. Any card showing the player with that team gets added. If not, then maybe a player collection (Richie Shaffer, Josh Hamilton, Evan Longoria), but not in the HVR binder.
And yes, those facebook "how OCD are you?" tests - I always score 100%.

I've always been more of a player fan than a team fan, so this was never a problem for me. I'd collect them in the minors, majors, Japan, wherever. If they had a card, I wanted it in my collection.

Teams do not matter in my player collections. In fact, it is easier to organize player collections of fellas who have not played for one of my teams. This is because I get a bit torn over needing the card for the team collection and the player collection. I tend to place the first card in the team collection, then if I get duplicate I'll put it in the player's collection. An example would be Ernie Banks. His cards go in the Cubs sets if the card was printed while he was still playing ball. Banks cards printed after his retirement, go into his player collection. Team first, player second. -I suppose I collect using the same formula of how ball should be played.
Oh, and for the 2016 Cubs, I am collecting a rookie card for each of the players. Again, team doesn't matter and it's definitely easier if they were a rookie for someone else. But, that's just the one card, and they go in the 2016 team collection and are not PCs.

I do that. My Cleveland Cavaliers box includes plenty of Mark Price, Ron Harper, and Terrell Brandon cards from their post-Cleveland years. A few Chris Mills, Bobby Phills, and Tyrone Hill cards too. But nothing from Danny Ferry's San Antonio career!

I am among those who will collect a player even though they are no longer on my team. I have even sought out cards of players from the teams they were on before being on my Homie team. If I don't like the player though I won't collect beyond the base card from a set, or a card that is in an insert set of that player for their years off my team. Those guys I tend to not even attempt to find an auto card of. ON the other hand I tend to have very few "hated" players who have played for my teams. Now hated players who have never played on my teams there are loads more.
All that said I do tend to prefer the players in my team's uniform.

I collect: Baseball, Football, Hockey, Mostly Vintage pre1980, My Homie teams - Washington/Baltimore Teams Senators (Twins, Rangers), Expos/Nationals, Redskins, Capitals, Bullets/Wizards - HOFers - Non-sport (mostly TV shows and movies). Team doesn't matter for me when it comes to my John Olerud collection. I'm a life-long Blue Jays fan and started collecting Olerud in his rookie year 1990. It was pretty disappointing how his tenure with Toronto played out leading to the trade, but I still collect him on all his teams - Mets, Mariners, and even the hated AL East rivals Red Sox and Yankees.

I stick mostly to players on a Red Sox card for that year, but there are a few I collect with other teams as well, Ted Williams with the Seanators/Rangers, Tony Conigliaro with the Angels, Dwight Evans with the Orioles to name a few. Typically they are career Red Sox who did not have a large percentage of cards with other teams. Some of my favorite players, Nomar and Clemens have way too many cards on other teams for me to try and chase those as well.
