I was thinking about what you said about the numbering and the year before. If topps was really smart they would start the traded set as series 1 for the coming year then in Jan they would continue that numbering from were the traded left off. There you would have the whole of the year in the one set. Like new cars coming out in oct the year before. I would collect them if they did that.

Huh. Interesting hypothetical. Right now, I only collect base sets. No updates, traded, etc. They're complete. I'm happy. And I move on. I wonder how I'd react to a "third series" being a continuation of the "set." I might well purchase them under those circumstances, which is kind of weird reasoning.
I might not, though, because I was always content with the understanding that each year's set is more about what happened the year before than it is about the current year. I was also always content to have one base card of every player -- plus leader cards, or all-star cards, or whatever, each year. So I saw no need for traded and update sets, which, I presume, involve essentially reissuing carof the same players on their new teams. But if it was all one set...I dunno.

100% agreement here. Wish Topps would just name the update set Series 3 and continue the numbers. I believe they would sell way more then since people like me would HAVE to have it because it would make my set incomplete if I didn't. I know many mambers do not collect as much of the update as the other series just from the trades I have tried to make.

I'm with you on the "same backs as the 'base' set" thing. I consider Traded/Update sets to just be like "high-series" cards from the '60s. I also integrate a lot of the factory bonus inserts into my overall "set" for each year.

I personally collect all of the errors and variations and won't consider my set complete until I get them all. I usually don't care for the inserts. I'm looking only for cards with the same backs as the "base" set.
If you are asking me then you are in big trouble.
