Question for you set builders,
How much do you usually spend building a set to completion? Right now I do it the lazy way. I wait for people who buy boxes to break looking for the rare inserts to post hand collated sets on Ebay and then buy sets that way.
BUT.. I admit the idea of buiding a set from packs does sound like fun. I built my very first set, 1981 Topps, that way. So im curious at what the approximate cost is to build from packs for say like a topps base set or whatever

Depends on what set & year you are looking for. If you want stuff from the early 90s, you can complete a set pretty cheaply, like maybe around $10. My local card shop sells packs of early 90s stuff for 25 cents each.

Oops.. Should have been more specific. I mean current stuff. I saw people mentioning 2014 topps series 2.
Like for Topps each year I normally either buy the factory set or watch ebay for someone that offers a hand collated set for a decent price. But if building by hand isnt too much more expensive I think it would be fun to actually build from packs again. So Im talking like 2014 topps base set or a couple of the other topps releases

build sets through
packs is UBER FUN!
but the uber
includes ALOT of
expense. You wil
end up spending 5x
or more busting
packls than what
the set is worth.
But you could
stumble on a cool
insert along the
way. It really is
up to you and your
wallet. I bust
packs all the time
from sets that I
can buy for $5.

I actually love the idea of collecting through only packs/boxes. I've never tried to purchase singles on the internet for that reason. The complete sets I have I completed that way. Inserts or parallels, however, I would purchase in lots or by other means. It's what makes collecting fun.....we all run the race, we just find a different way to the finish line.

Hobby Jumbo boxes for Topps does the trick for us.
We busted 1 box (10 packs, 50 cards per), and completed the 330-card base set for each 2014 series 1 and 2. We also got a nice selection of inserts and parallels for collections and to sell. Also get a decent amout of extra base cards for throwing in the commons boxes. Each box costs around $90. Worth it - financially, no. Time spent with son, opening, sorting, sheeting: YES. Some things, there is no price.

I start my set building by buying packs/boxes, and then once I get to the point where I'm getting too many doubles I just go online to Just Commons or to my local card store to buy the remaining cards. I still get the thrill of ripping open a pack to see what I've gotten. Sure, buying complete sets is more efficient - but not nearly as fun. Right now I'm working on Topps Series 2 baseball and Topps Heritage. I've gotten to the point with both that I need to stop buying packs and just get the remaining singles. Of course that'll be tougher for Heritage where cards 426-500 are all SP's.

I agree with you about the SP's Kirk.....those you have to get online otherwise you'll be spending way too much money. Especially since they can make up about 20% of a set sometimes.

Yep. I'm thinking completing the Heritage set is going to be more of a long term project unless I can find a dealer willing to make a great deal on SP cards at the card show I'll be going to this Saturday.

What makes it
really rough and
expensive is when
there sps and then
even rarer version
sps of the same
darn cards. I just
try for the first
sps and then am
happy with whatever
I end up with the
others. For
example,
the "errors" and
throwback unis from
heritage. You gotta
be kidding me. Kirk wrote: Yep. I'm thinking completing the Heritage set is going to be more of a long term project unless I can find a dealer willing to make a great deal on SP cards at the card show I'll be going to this Saturday.

said, another one
