I joined this site about a year ago with ambitions of logging my card catalog and being an active member. 12 months later and I realized I hadn't interacted with a single person, added any sort of input to the database, or even posted on the forums. Time to take the first step. So hello everyone. I have been active for about a week now. It is surprising how long it can take to list cards because as I pull a card out to list it, I end up either caught up in nostalgia or down deep rabbit holes because the card reminds me of something etc. So after about a week of being active, I have only 55 cards listed, with 23 missing pictures scanned and accepted. I have now posted to the forums and also sent out a few messages contacting different users. I hope to keep this level of involvement only increasing as time goes by, but I did want to specifically thank everyone who contributes. I have been on this site at least weekly through the previous year and it is an incredible community with an incredible collection of information.
I plan to keep up this level of activity so hope to be speaking to most of you either on here or in messages etc. I only collect baseball so that might limit my interactions with some of you but I still enjoy looking through the other sports and non-sports from time to time.
Finally to a few questions:
When you get a message do you receive any kind of notification?
Do you get a notification if someone comments on a forum post that you have posted on or a forum post that you have started?
Is it considered rude to reach out to a person who might list a card in their collection that you might believe is an error? For example if you list a 1/1 and notice that someone else had listed it in their collection, is it taboo to send a message just pointing the fact out? I ask more because I want to make sure I am not entering it by mistake or that the card company didn't actually make a dupe of a 1/1.
Are there any other community taboos that a newer person should be aware of aside from the listed rules/regs and not asking "clown questions"?

A belated welcome to the site!
Entering my collection has taken me years. I have 70k cards entered and at least that much more sitting unsorted in boxes waiting to get added. I'll get there some day.
Be warned.....when I joined this site I only collected Topps Football (and was content with that). Since joining my collection has expanded (and increased in size tenfold) and so has the amount of time I spend here. I blame the members of this site. Their knowledge of the cards they collect and their passion for the hobby is contagious.
Again, welcome.

Re: messages. I receive an email each time I receive a new message. On your profile, click "Edit Profile." All the way down at the bottom there are different options for different things. The 7th option down is "Receive an email notification when you receive a new message?". Switch that to yes to enable this feature.
Re: forums. There is a way to subscribe to a forum thread. If you open up the thread, just above the first post on the right hand side is a link that says "subscribe." I believe this will send you an email each time a new comment is left.
Re: 1/1s. I'm guessing you're referring to a 1/1 you have. What I would do first is on the card's page, where it says "x listed in collections", click that. Many may have that card on their wantlist, which is still considered their "collection". However, if they do have it in their collection, reach out and ask about it. If they are a genuine member, they will most likely work with you to figure out what the issue is (duplicates, listing mistake, etc).
Re: taboos. Nothing here is really taboo. You're right; following the guidelines goes a long way. But there are definitely no clown questions here. This is a very knowledgeable community who loves to help, so ask away! Just be respectful and polite and that's all anyone really asks. You'll see that we all have very passionate opinions about different things, but all get along in the end.
Welcome to the Database! I'm sure more members will be along to welcome you as well!

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

To follow up on Jason's comment. No clown questions, but there are some clowns on here. I'm sure you've seen that already though. This is a close community and mostly there is no right or wrong in an opinion. Everyone here collects in their own way and has their own vision. There is a great deal of respect amongst everyone and they value each other's view. With that said, if you have a question, ask; it's helped me. Some of the veteran members have reached out and provided guidance when needed.

Welcome (maybe again?).
The other messages appear to cover everything. I'll just add, that as long as you're respectful and ask questions without maliciousness, things will go mostly fine.
Yes, we joke around, so we do clown with each other, but that's to be expected when you finally find a group of people who think like you!
As you can see, a lot of helpful people, and you haven't even heard from C2Cigars yet!
Enjoy your time here - don't get in over your head - but if you do, just let those you're dealing with know, and most are understanding.
Have fun!

The responsiveness on here is amazing. Thank you for the welcome and for the tips.
P.S. I am a huge Vikings fan @Cnangle so hopefully we are chatting about history being made for them in the coming weeks.

Welcome aboard!
Looks like you've gotten good feedback regarding the mechanics of notifications, etc., already, so I'll just expand on the subject of contacting other members.
If you have a question about something that another member lists as 'in' their collection, go ahead and make contact! The only suggestion I would make is that you make sure you are respectful in your tone. If you're simply trying to open a dialogue, I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. If you come out guns-a-blazing with accusations and name calling, then there will be trouble. Based on the style of your post, I doubt this would be an issue.
Good Luck!

Hey, welcome to the site. It took me a long time to get involved in here as well, but the deeper I go down this rabbit hole, the more I enjoy it.

Welcome Jimmymac22. It is a long process adding cards to your collection and trade lists. I get so side tracked when going trough boxes because of the memories from opening packs at a younger age. I found a few boxes that I had pulled some cards to add to my colection that I didn't even add. So thos cards sat in a box for about 6 months until this past weekend. So enjoy and have fun on here.
