Was bored and know my nephew collects then at the doc appt today he's telling me how he watched his grown children play this silly card game while on vaca in Orlando. MTG he says .... and of course that got us to talking. So got looking to see just how many sets there are (never got an answer lol) when I noticed when I click on brand it only shows 8 sets but year by year there are sets not even listed under brand, normal or not normal???

I bet I know what the backs of all the cards look like. Other than that, I got nothing.

On this site, if you search "2011 Magic", you will see all of the sets, parallel, and insert sets for that given year.  Sets range from 90 cards to 350 or so cards.  The only parallel is a foil parallel.

For some reason, when uploaded, the set for each year that is called Magic XXXX did not get the prefix Magic the Gathering.  So if you search "XXXX Magic the Gathering" that set rarely shows up in the results. I think this needs to be fixed for every year that a set like that is issued.  

MTG on this site is still in development.  Right now, most cards are not searchable individually. Most of us found this site because we googled an individual card and one of the first results was TCDB. That is not the case for MTG (yet). Another issue isthatunless you are really into MTG, there is no way to know what set an individual card is from.  Even if you are on this site, you can't search that card because the name doesn't have a PID and the card does notnamewhat set it is from. The best you can get fromthe card is the year issued.  There is a symbol on each card that identifies the set but unless you know what it is, good luck.

Card names do repeat themselves through the years; there are severalartists identifiedon the cards they drew; and there are subsets within each set: Instants, Sorceries, Planeswalkers, Lands, Artifacts, Enchantments, and Creatures.  Also, in each set there are Commons (C), Uncommons (UC), Rares (R), and Mythic Rares (MR).  These are identifiedby the set symbol in the way that it is pictured: http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/95748/cid/10639107/2014-Magic-the-Gathering-Journey-Into-Nyx-NNO-Expansion-Symbol

This is probably more info than you really cared to know but in the 2 months I have been working on loading up images (front and back of only the cards my son has), I have learned a fair bit.  I am hoping to develop this category a bit more so that it attracts the huge fan base of this game.  It starts with, when googling a card, TCDB becomes one of the first hits in the results, just like we all found for sports cards.

As you started this thread, I wish to put outthere a request to anyone who is knowledgeable and interested in expanding MTG along the lines I suggested, could you contact me via private message. If 3 or 4 of us pooled our ideas and presented them to Admin, we might get approved direction on where to go with all of this.

I have been trying to get my nephew interested in coming to check the site out but he grumbles and comes up with excuses all the time, i don't have a laptop, I have no time, etc. LOL

Both of my sons are serious MTG players, but they don't see any benefit from developing the MTG portion of TCBD because it exits in a comprehensive form on other sites specific to the game.

All of the other sites I have seen are into the selling of the cards, not cataloguing one's collection.  As well, how many other sites existed for sportscards that closed down on the users and they ended up here?

I don't collect MTG but if this site is well-developed for MTG, that group may venture over here when their other resources cease to exist but only if there has been serious development to make it worth their while.  Just like all of us who ended up here looking for info on a particular sports card and stayed because they were quickly hooked.
