I have noticed a few times (two today) that there are sometimes New Galleries that show up in the "New Gallery" section that do not have a sample card showing. I am not talking about an adult image not showing up (that is a totally different issue) these look to be sets that haven't had a sample card posted to their front yet. I don't think I am at the level to add/edit those yet.
As for the adult images since I check the site both from home and at work, sometimes while viewing the frontpage at work there is an adult set in the Gallery section.

Not surprising. New galleries are added as soon as the set has images for all of the cards. Sample images require someone with Level 8 permissions to assign one...

The major releases, Admin likes to have the say as to who should be the sample card as those get seen quite often by all. Admin likes to pick the most definitive card (like the 1979 Topps Ozzie RC).
Insert/related sets and all the other types are typically user provided.
I generally will go to the set and carefully choose an image if I see it's missing the sample. Sometimes, it's a set I know nothing about, and leave it for someone with more knowledge.
I do hate it when the sample is chosen and the card is a one-off of the rest of the set. Admin will change those upon request.

Wait, Admin likes to have fun on this site too? I guess I can accept that answer. But he better not overdo it!!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I generally will add a sample card when I see one missing for recently completed galleries, except when I can't. I also stay away from the Panini Instant and Topps Now sets. They'll show up again the next day and the day after that and the day after that. I just don't care enough about those 2 brands to waste time with them.

I do too. In that case it is NOT a sample then. I think somewhere in the description of the sample cards it does say something about them being a card that typifies the set, not a one-off that looks nothing like the rest of a set. For new visitors seeing the set for the first time the sample card needs to show how the set can be identified. Now-Days its even more important, then again now days you almost need 2 or 3 sample cards as the set designs sometimes change within the sets.
