?Hi,
Recently I noticed and responded to threads regarding Errors & Variations.
?If possible, I think it would be a good idea to be able to add just the base set w/o the E&Vs attached. NO, I'm not recommending not showing the E&Vs, that would be absurd. Maybe have the sets listed w/ E&Vs and w/o E&Vs. Not sure how Admin would handle it, but a valid suggestion.
?I have had numerous requests for E&Vs from TCDB members because they appear on my Sell/Trade list when in fact they are just "tag-alongs" by just adding 2-3 extra sets for trade or sale. I'm sure we don't go back and adjust every extra set we add. I hope I'm making sense here..... please some additional input might help what I'm trying to say.
?~BOB~

I concur with Bob on this request as I added several sets to my collection but know for a fact that I do not have ALL the cards listed for that "set". Recent years, I've been able to go back in and delete the variations/SPs (which is also a giant pain in the neck - even for just the 2015 Topps Update set for baseball, which is a 400-card set, I had to go in and remove 50 or so SPs!). Having the option to "Add set w/o SPs" or "Add set with SPs" would be ideal (IMO) and I think that would eliminate cards being listed that aren't really in collections or available for sale/for trade.

I would love to see the ability to add the entire set without VAR and SP. We all need to be vigilant to have everything listed accurately and to be sure the ###a card is the base card and all variations are ###b, ###c, etc. It would be nice to be able to do this if you got a factory set to be able to add all cards with that. But then there are cards issued in factory sets not issued in packs. See the 2007 Topps set for example. The only way to get the Billy Butler (#636) rookie is by breaking a factory set. Thanks!

Good point.
I'd like to see the errors and variations put on another tab--perhap inserts and related sets.
Or, the variations could be included in some type of drop down menu for a card where you can select one, the other, or multiple, but the card would still count as one card towards the set. For example:
X #1 Bill Smith
- #1a Bill Smith err
- #1b Bill Smith cor
X #2 Joe Adams
This way, if you had Joe Smith for trade/sale, but didn't know, or want to designate, which version you had there'd be no confusion. Marking variations in the sub menu could be optional for those that like to be more specific. Only one would count towards set completion, but all would count towards total card count (or not).
In collecting the 1956 Topps set, I just mark one of each card i have without regard for white back or grey back. For the '56T that I had for sale/trade, I was originally just marking one without regard to the card stock.

That sounds like it would be a very useful feature. I'm wondering about some of the details of implementation.
How do you decide which card 'belongs' in the base set and which one gets excluded? Is the error card always the baseline card because it was presumably made first? Is it just a judgement call about which one is more common? If it is a variation situation (as opposed to ERR/COR), how often is one common and one rare? Is it normal for them to be made in reletively equal numbers? If so, which one gets included? In this case, aren't both versions technically SP compared to the cards in the set that don't have variations?

Personally, I like it the way it is, but I could see where a person who collects complete sets wouldn't. If I didn't see that card 400 had two versions, I wouldn't know to look at mine and see which one I had. Maybe, just maybe, an option where, if I added a complete set as a whole, and there were variations, a second screen popped up asking me which version (or versions) of card 400, card 478, and card 515 I had, if these cards had variations. Then the site would add my specific example of the complete set to my collection. This might be very hard to implement though.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

When you select "Add all cards in this set to your collection" from "Choose an action", I think a secondary window asking "Would you like to add variations?" might work. Or just add more options to the "Choose an action" menu. Such as, "Add all cards & variations in this set to your collection" And the "Add all cards in this set to your collection" choice would only add the "a" variation by default (e.g., add #400a, but not #400b, #400c, etc).

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I would find the option to add all cards (including only "a" variations) very useful. I think I would still dig in and manually verify which version I own, but if I could display only E&V it wouldn't be too difficult.
There are a lot of sets that I have not yet entered (or I've omitted all cards with variations) until I can go through my physical collection to see which versions I have. One day....

Factory sets might have the "b" or "corrected" version included.

Yeah, I like C2C's idea of two prompts in the action menu. I might suggest one that says "add all cards with all variants" and another that says "add all cards with manual variant entry". Or something like that. Then if you select the second choice, it would be ideal if it went to the "errors and variants" page with the checkboxes all ready to go.
