The site awards for 2017 are coming in January 2018.  Members will get to vote for winners in a bevy of categories and others will be selected based on contributions to the site.  January 2018 will also mark the 10th year anniversary of the site.  As a countdown and retrospective, each month we’ll review the stats and present the awards as they would have gone down (minus the categories based on features that weren’t available yet or the ones that require member voting).  This month, we look back at 2008.

2008 – A Look Back

The site launched in January 2008.  Only six card categories were present at first: Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Racing, and Soccer.  You could only browse and search by set.  Within each set, the Checklist, User Comments, Ratings, Rookies, Trivia, and Inserts and Related Sets areas were present.   The ability to browse by player was added later on in the year. 

Members could submit images and checklists, but couldn’t process their own submissions or make direct edits to the site.  There was no inaccuracies reporting link or button to add sets – everything had to come through the “Contact Us” page.  The “Recently Added” page was available along with the “About Us” page.  There was also a “Hobby Articles” section.  The “Top Sets” and “Top Members” links were adding during the year.

Random Card of the Day was a feature since day one, but members couldn’t leave comments.  That’s about all there was available during the early days.  All other features were added over the years.

I got back into this hobby early last year, and I am glad I happened to come across this site fairly early into collecting again. This site has clearly come a long way since 2008, and I look forward to seeing this site continue to grow and thrive. 

Wow, are DaClyde and Avs really that old ?!??!

This is so cool. I love the fact that the Database's 10 year anniversary will coincide with my 30th anniversary in the hobby. If my calculations are correct (and they may not be- math is not my strong suit!) it would take us more than 12 years to have every single card already posted show up as Card of the Day, and I know that the number posted is just going to go up and up.

Interesting that some of the contributors are still contributing and some of them have not been seen in years.

I remember when some of the great features we are now all used to were added but I don't really remember when. When you do the exact same thing every day it does kind of blur together, not a bad thing.

Wow, time flies.  Can't believe I've been here for a decade.  As active as I was back then, I was glad when so many people blew by me in the rankings because it meant a lot of content was being added very quickly.

I wondered how thefirst members came to find this site.I myself found it searching to identify a card I had. Since then I have told many other collectors; not sure how many became members but I try to spread the word. For newer members, I am sure it is the same as I did or have been told about it by friends.  But how did the first members come about? And I wonder if Admin has a record of those who became members in chronological order (almost like joining a party where you are issued a # - the smaller the number, the longer you have been a member).

Wow. Now I feel old. 2018 will be my 50th anniversary in the hobby.
