Out of curiosity I searched through the first few 100 pages of the "Random Card of the Day" posts. My main thought was to see what was "The First Non-Sport Card Featured"? When did the Random Posts start? and other little tidbits of info from the Random posts archives. [Has anyone been keeping a spreadsheet on the cards featured?]
I forget when I first noticed the Card of the Day feature and then it took me a long time to discover there was a discussion about the card and members could contribute to it. Had to do a brief search of the forum to see how to go about commenting. I think at the beginning there wasn't a "conversation" just a brief description of the card or bio of the player.
To start the Random Card of the Day started 14 January 2008 (when the site went live) with a NON-Random card to start things off. Admin decided to kick things off with one of THE MOST Recognized cards in trading card history the famous (or infamous) T-206 Honus Wagner card. It is interesting that the first several posts the card featured had a brief paragraph about the card or the player featured. One of the things I was going to look for that I didn't was when the "conversations" started being just a conversation from members who were viewing the card and their observations about the card.
It is interesting that in the early days/weeks it seemed that 3 of the 4 main sports Baseball, Football and Basketball occured most often. Hockey appeared and even Soccer appears but not as often as the other 3 sports in the order mentioned. The 1986-87 Fleer Basketball cards appeared often.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST NON-SPORT CARD FEATURED? In looking at the first few pages of the random card posts one might think that on 30 December 2008 the first non-sport card appeared. Well technically it is a Football card. The card featured that day is the 1990 Pro-Set Football card #1990 Santa Claus. I suspect that it technically wasn't a "random" card, since it was 5 days after Christmas. So the actual first Non-Sport card to be featured as a Random card of the day was posted on Monday 11 March 2013. It was the 2003 Inkworks X-Files Season 9 card #63 Credits for Episode 20 "The Truth".
First Team Card Featured? A personal favorite of mine is the team card that was first featured is the 1974 Topps Baseball card number 226(b) The Washington National League Team, which was actually the San Diego Padres. Briefly eversince the Washington Senators left for Texas in late 1971 there were attempts and rumored attempts to bring a baseball team back to Washington DC (it finally happened 33 years later in 2005 when the Montreal Expos moved to become the Washington Nationals) in 1973 the San Deigo Padres were in financial straights and attendance was low and there were rumors the team was going to be moved. A legitimate proposal and the beginnings of a transaction concerned the team moving to DC so much so that Topps made 15 alternate versions of Padres player cards including the Team Card with the full team photo maked as "Washington Nat'l Lea" in commemoration of the move. The move didn't happen.
I collect: Baseball, Football, Hockey, Mostly Vintage pre1980, My Homie teams - Washington/Baltimore Teams Senators (Twins, Rangers), Expos/Nationals, Redskins, Capitals, Bullets/Wizards - HOFers - Non-sport (mostly TV shows and movies).
My Trade List is very much a work in progress
