I'm doing a reorganization of my collection right now, trying to figure out what I have and what I need, etc... 

Well, on the listings for 1997 Select, I notice that there's a "B" or "R" beside each players name.. I'm just curious why... 

After doing a random sampling of the cards, it looks like it stands for "blue" or "red" as that's the basic design.

  If each card only has either blue lettering or red lettering, I see no need for denoting the difference.  So many different sets since the 50s have had names in various colors with no notation.

I agree. I'm just pointing out that that's what the "B" and "R" seem to mean.

Interesting, though, the latter half of the collection doesn't have the "R" or "B".

The Blue cards were shortprinted compared tothe redsat about a 1:2 ratio.  There are 50 Blues and 100 Reds.

If most of the sets from the 50s and early 60s had the later series shortprinted, why are they not noted here?   Again, some of those sets use different coloring schemes for each card.
